That means your iPad can be an external screen for your game system, your Raspberry Pi, basically anything you could plug into a TV or monitor. And for $5, you get a bunch of fun filters and adjustment tools. (A <em>lot <\/em>of people recommended this one \u2014 thanks to all who sent it in!)<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=nOD\/rLJHOac&amp;mid=24542&amp;murl=https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/d\/surface-laptop-studio-2\/8rqr54krf1dz&amp;u1=VergeInstaller092223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Microsoft\u2019s Surface Laptop Studio 2<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> This is the Windows MacBook Pro, and I mean that in the best way. The first-gen Laptop Studio is my daily driver Windows PC, and I love the look, the funky screen, everything about it except the processor and the battery life. Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23883722\/microsoft-surface-laptop-studio-2-hands-on-features-photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seems to have fixed both<\/a> and then some. I\u2019m psyched about this thing, even if it does start at $1,999.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/09\/20\/1197954107\/gamestop-dumb-money-based-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Based on a true story<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u201d <\/strong>The movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/movie\/792293-dumb-money?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Dumb Money<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>sounds like it\u2019s not particularly accurate but still a lot of fun, but I\u2019m still thinking about this <em>Planet Money <\/em>episode that dove into the story of how the GameStop saga turned into a bidding war and a race in Hollywood to make the first movie about the diamond-hands crowd. Hollywood\u2019s a weird place, y\u2019all. (Side note: last week\u2019s episode, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/09\/15\/1197954055\/axie-infinity-north-korea-ronin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the <em>Axie Infinity<\/em> hack<\/strong><\/a>, was also really good.)<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Echo-Hub\/dp\/B0BCR7M9KX?tag=theverge02-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Amazon\u2019s Echo Hub<\/strong><\/a>. One $179.99 screen, which you can mount on your wall or leave in a dock on a table, that controls all your smart home stuff. (At least all your Echo-capable stuff, anyway, which is a pretty big list.) I\u2019m in on the smart home but out on controlling everything with voice commands, and this looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/20\/23880766\/amazon-alexa-echo-hub-smart-displays-price-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a solid all-in-one controller<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/movies-league\/#scoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Vulture<\/em>\u2019s Movies Fantasy League<\/strong><\/a>. I\u2019m a sucker for any kind of fantasy league, so, of course, I\u2019m all in on this one from our friends at <em>Vulture<\/em>: you pick a bunch of 2023 movies, and get points for how they perform in theaters and at awards shows. I\u2019m taking <em>The Killer<\/em> and <em>Paw Patrol <\/em>all the way to the top. OpenAI\u2019s image-generation tool seems to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/20\/23881241\/openai-dalle-third-version-generative-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gotten some big upgrades<\/a>, particularly in its ability to integrate with ChatGPT to improve the prompts you give the tool. (It\u2019s just chatbots on chatbots, y\u2019all.) Right now, your best bet to get DALL-E 3 is probably through Bing Chat, where it\u2019s rolling out slowly \u2014 OpenAI says it won\u2019t be in ChatGPT until next month.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?xs=1&amp;id=1025X1701640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.google.android.apps.youtube.producer%26pcampaignid%3Dweb_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>YouTube Create<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s deeply bizarre that it took YouTube this long to make an actually useful, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/21\/23883755\/youtube-create-mobile-video-editing-app-tiktok-capcut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mobile-first video tool for creators<\/a>. But hey: it\u2019s in the Play Store now. In beta. And maybe not accessible to everyone. But if you\u2019re a Shorts-making fiend, it\u2019s still progress.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tally.so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tally 2.0<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Google Forms is the worst, and everyone should stop using it. The new version of Tally is much nicer: it looks a lot (like, a <em>lot<\/em>) like Notion, and it\u2019s pretty easy both to build and share a form for collecting really any kind of data from your friends or co-workers or whoever. And most of it\u2019s free to use.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bard.google.com\/extensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google Bard Extensions<\/strong><\/a>. Google\u2019s AI chatbot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/19\/23878999\/google-bard-ai-chatbot-gmail-docs-drive-extensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">got a big upgrade this week<\/a>: you can now integrate it with Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and other Google products. Bard\u2019s still dumb in a lot of ways, but I\u2019ve found it surprisingly useful for things like \u201cshow me fun videos about the Roman Empire\u201d and \u201cwhat was the confirmation number from my last Delta flight?\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whispernotes.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Whisper Notes<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> I\u2019ve become sort of obsessed with voice-notes apps, mostly because I spend a lot of time walking around pushing a stroller and need a way to write down all the things I\u2019ll otherwise forget to do. Whisper, OpenAI\u2019s speech-to-text system, is really good, and this is one of the better-looking apps I\u2019ve seen built with it. I don\u2019t know. Interactive widgets are awesome! And with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 coming out this week, a huge number of Apple developers have released new or upgraded apps with really fun widgets you can interact with right from your homescreen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There are lots of good new apps to try \u2014\u00a0everybody\u2019s favorite Shortcuts guru Matthew Cassinelli <a href=\"https:\/\/matthewcassinelli.com\/ios-17-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rounded up 160<\/strong><\/a>, which should get you started \u2014\u00a0but I\u2019ve been thinking more about the different ways you might approach becoming a Widget Person. Because if you\u2019re not already living the widget life? It\u2019s time. Here are a few ways to get started:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list my-20 list-disc pl-18 marker:text-blurple\/100 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Playback widgets. <\/strong>This is the single best and most universally useful thing you can do: put a widget for your favorite music or podcasts app \u2014\u00a0many have already updated, Spotify infuriatingly has not, and I think <a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Overcast\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> widget is the best so far \u2014\u00a0and you can play or pause your stuff from your homescreen. Easy win.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Checkbox widgets<\/strong>. Do you use a to-do list app? Use its widget to see and check off your tasks throughout the day! (I really like <a href=\"https:\/\/culturedcode.com\/things\/blog\/2023\/09\/interactive-widgets-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Things widget<\/strong><\/a>, and the built-in Reminders app has a good one, too.)<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Timer widgets.<\/strong> If you\u2019re the Pomodoro-tracker type, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/meaningful-things.com\/focus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Focus<\/strong><\/a> to quickly start and stop your work sessions. You can use <a href=\"https:\/\/timelines.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Timelines<\/strong><\/a> to track your time. <a href=\"https:\/\/overdesigned.net\/timesup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Time\u2019s Up<\/strong><\/a> is pretty good for just setting and stopping timers of any kind for any reason.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Counter widgets.<\/strong> Interactive widgets make it <em>so <\/em>much easier to track just about anything. You can use a habit-tracking app like <a href=\"https:\/\/gentler.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gentler Streak<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/streaksapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Streaks<\/strong><\/a> (which I am finally actually using every day), a single-purpose app like <a href=\"https:\/\/waterminder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WaterMinder<\/strong><\/a>, or just a number counter like <a href=\"https:\/\/agiletortoise.com\/tally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tally<\/strong><\/a> to keep track of just about anything.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><strong>Weather widgets<\/strong>. Now, instead of just seeing the temperature or one graph or whatever, apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainviewer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NOAA Weather Radar RainViewer<\/strong><\/a> (that name!) let you tap to switch from temperature to precipitation and more, all on the homescreen.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I could keep going, but that\u2019s a pretty good start. Think about it like this: anything you do on your phone that is just \u201ctap the app, tap a thing, close the app\u201d can and should be replaced by an interactive widget. And at least for me, that\u2019s a lot more of my phone usage than I expected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Oh, and a bonus: you can and absolutely should make your own widgets! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.david-smith.org\/apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Widgetsmith<\/strong><\/a> is a great app that just got a bunch of new interactive features \u2014 you can use it to make calendar widgets, weather widgets, photo album widgets, activity widgets, music widgets \u2014 practically anything you can think of. I also like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cromulentlabs.com\/launcher.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Launcher<\/strong><\/a>, which lets you make widgets to launch apps, call someone, go to a webpage, and lots more \u2014 or almost anything else.
