This week was as newsy as any other, what with Elon Musk threatening to charge all X (formerly Twitter) users a fee, OpenAI launching DALL-E 3 and Cisco acquiring Splunk in a deal worth $28 billion. Elsewhere, outgoing TC editor-in-chief Matthew Panzarino published his iPhone 15 review, Apple released iOS 17, Y Combinator got defensive and Microsoft researchers accidentally exposed terabytes of data. In a livestreamed conversation with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk said that the company was \u201cmoving to a small monthly payment\u201d for the use of the X system, suggesting that such a change would be necessary to deal with the problem of increasing bots on the platform.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/20\/openai-unveils-dall-e-3-allows-artists-to-opt-out-of-training\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>OpenAI unveils DALL-E 3: <\/strong><\/a>OpenAI unveiled DALL-E 3, an upgraded version of its text-to-image tool, which uses <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/07\/chatgpt-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-open-ai-powered-chatbot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a> \u2014 OpenAI\u2019s viral AI chatbot \u2014 to take some of the pain out of prompting.\u00a0Via ChatGPT, subscribers to OpenAI\u2019s premium ChatGPT plans,\u00a0ChatGPT Plus\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/28\/openai-launches-a-chatgpt-plan-for-enterprise-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT Enterprise<\/a>, can type in a request for an image and hone it through conversations with the chatbot, receiving the results directly within the chat app.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/21\/cisco-to-acquire-splunk-in-28b-mega-deal\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cisco buys Splunk:<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">Cisco has a reputation of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/08\/23\/how-cisco-keeps-its-startup-acquisition-engine-humming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building the company<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"> through acquisitions, but it\u2019s tended to stay away from the really huge ones. That changed this week when the company announced it was acquiring <\/span>Splunk for $28 billion<span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">. With <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">Splunk, Ron writes, Cisco gets an observability platform that could fit nicely into its security business to help customers better understand security threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/19\/apples-iphone-15-pro-max-goes-to-disneyland\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The iPhone 15 goes to Disneyland:<\/strong><\/a> For what\u2019s likely his last iPhone review at TechCrunch, Matthew took the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max to Disneyland. Literally. He had two days and some change to drag the phones through the parks capturing video, making purchases, using them as virtual tickets and vacation planners for reservations, coordinating a friends and family group, and more. The verdict? The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max prove that there\u2019s much more room for Apple to grow, Matt writes \u2014 albeit inward instead of outward.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/18\/with-ios-17-the-iphone-feels-like-a-mature-platform\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iOS grows up:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Romain reviewed iOS 17, whose arrival coincided with the launch of the iPhone 15. He found it to be a \u201cnice and polished\u201d update, spotlighting the overhauled keyboard with AI-assisted autocorrect, a Messages app with vastly improved search, and support for offline maps in Apple Maps. But the highlight is StandBy mode, he says, which displays glanceable information when the iPhone\u2019s charging on a MagSafe dock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/20\/why-is-y-combinator-so-defensive-lately\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Y Combinator goes on the defensive:<\/strong><\/a> Storied accelerator <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/tag\/y-combinator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Y Combinator<\/a> has been on the defensive as of late. Devin reports that Unity has done a 180, nixing plans to introduce a widely decried \u201cruntime fee\u201d for current versions of Unity and raising the revenue ceiling above which users must upgrade to the paid version of Unity.<\/p>\n<h2>Audio<\/h2>\n<p>In need of a quality podcast? You\u2019re in luck \u2014 TC\u2019s got plenty.<\/p>\n<p>This week on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equity<\/a><\/strong>, the crew hosted two \u2014 count \u2019em, <em>two<\/em> \u2014 podcasts on the ground at Disrupt. The first covered breaking IPO news around Instacart, as well as how Joby is all in on the Buckeye state, growth in the elder tech space and Writer bringing back nine-figure joy. The second was a retrospective, spanning topics from VC panel highlights to the latest from GM-backed self-driving car company Cruise.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/found\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Found<\/a><\/strong> hosted Bianca Cefalo, CEO and co-founder of Space DOTS, a space tech startup that makes testing materials in space cheaper and easier.
