General Hospital<\/em> <\/a>star Maurice Benard<\/strong> is getting candid about mental health following costar Billy Miller\u2019s death by suicide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the pandemic, I have been speaking out on suicide quite a lot,\u201d Benard, 60, shared via Instagram<\/a> on Tuesday, September 19. \u201cIn the beginning, I was hesitant. I didn\u2019t know how people would handle it. But it\u2019s been very encouraging so I have not stopped talking about it! It\u2019s really hard to understand mental illness unless you have experienced the depths of pain that comes with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The soap star \u2014 who has been open about his own mental health issues over the years \u2014 explained that when he hears about someone who has died by suicide, \u201cI feel like I could have done something about it \u2026 even though I probably couldn\u2019t. I don\u2019t know how to fix it,\u201d he shared, imploring fans to help spread awareness.\u201cWe have to figure it out. Because look \u2014 we only hear about the celebrities that commit suicide. We don\u2019t hear about all the other people that you know, that I know. The only way that I know how to fix it by what I\u2019m doing here. And that\u2019s talking \u2026 bringing awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benard, who detailed his journey with bipolar disorder in his 2020 memoir, Nothing General About It<\/em>, concluded his post with words of comfort for people going through difficult situations or are aware of others who are suffering.<\/p>\n

For those suffering in silence, Benard added, \u201cIf you\u2019re feeling in any kind of way like life is not worth living for,don\u2019t think twice to talk to someone. Take it from the most fragile person in the world, you can get through it. And life has a way of rewarding you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benard\u2019s important message about mental health awareness comes less than one week after Miller died by suicide<\/a> on Friday, September 15. He was 43 years old.<\/p>\n

Miller \u201cfought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years,\u201d the late actor\u2019s mother, Patricia Miller<\/strong>, told Soap Opera Digest <\/a><\/em>on Monday, September 18. \u201cHe did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
