In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmta.com\/sites\/default\/files\/reports-and-documents\/2023\/01\/2023.01.25_ccsf_23.0125_cpuc_cruise_tier_2_advice_letter_protest_002.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmta.com\/sites\/default\/files\/reports-and-documents\/2023\/01\/2023.01.23_protest_of_waymo_llc_tier_3_advice_letter_0001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letters<\/a> written to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the officials on San Francisco County\u2019s Transportation Authority say the expansion of either service \u201cis unreasonable,\u201d citing recent incidents involving stopped driverless vehicles blocking traffic and obstructing emergency responders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">The GM-backed Cruise and Alphabet-owned Waymo are currently the only companies permitted to offer driverless rides to passengers in San Francisco. In June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/23\/23180156\/cruise-driverless-vehicle-charge-riders-san-francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cruise won a permit to charge for rides<\/a> in its autonomous vehicles (AV) between 10PM and 6AM, while Waymo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/11\/19\/23467784\/waymo-provide-fully-driverless-rides-san-francisco-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtained a permit to offer fully driverless rides<\/a> a few months later. Meanwhile, a driverless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/waymo-rush-hour-traffic-standstill-17739556.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waymo vehicle created a traffic jam<\/a> in San Francisco after it stopped in the middle of an intersection earlier this month. Firefighters say they could only stop the vehicle from running over the hose after \u201cthey shattered a front window\u201d of the car. Officials say companies should be required to collect more data about the performance of the vehicles, including how often and how long their driverless vehicles block traffic. While the company gained approval from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/san-francisco\/2022\/12\/19\/autonomous-vehicle-cruise-san-francisco-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Department of Motor Vehicles in December<\/a>, it\u2019s still waiting for the green light from CPUC.
