Nowadays, Selena Gomez<\/a><\/strong> is one of the biggest names in the world. That said, the Texas native\u2019s rise to fame wasn\u2019t always easy. After getting her start on Barney & Friends<\/em> in 2002, Selena worked her way to the top as both an actress and singer.<\/p>\n To date, the Grammy-nominated artist has over 100 acting credits under her belt, as well as three studio albums. Moreover, in September 2020, Selena launched Rare Beauty. Her decision to branch out to cosmetics was about more than just makeup.<\/p>\n \u201cBeauty doesn\u2019t have to be defined by a like or a comment, or your body,\u201d Selena told Allure<\/em> magazine<\/a> a month prior to the brand\u2019s launch. \u201cThe whole time we were creating [Rare Beauty], we were always under the notion that this was going to be also about\u00a0mental health\u00a0and creating a safe place for people to connect.\u201d<\/p>\n Over the years, the \u201cLose You to Love Me\u201d singer has used her platform to advocate for mental health and body image. In October 2018, Selena entered a New York City rehab facility<\/a>. \u201cShe has dealt with anxiety and depression since she was a teenager,\u201d a source told Life & Style<\/em> at the time. \u201cShe recognizes her demons and is getting help before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n After a month in treatment, Selena returned to Los Angeles, where she continues to acknowledge just how far she\u2019s come. \u201cI feel like I was supposed to go through everything I\u2019ve gone through. I had low self-esteem \u2014 and that\u2019s something I work on continuously \u2014 but I feel so empowered because I\u2019ve gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally,\u201d she expressed to WSJ Magazine<\/em><\/a> in January 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMy highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time,\u201d the Wizards of Waverly Place<\/em> alum recalled. \u201cI found out I do suffer from mental health issues and honestly, that was such a relief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n After over six years of therapy and various treatment centers, Selena is thriving. \u201cI realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust,\u201d the former Disney Channel star said. \u201cI got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
