Russel Brand did a show on Saturday night, just hours after being accused of rape, sexual assault and abuse.<\/a> The sold-out show was part of his Bipolarisation tour. <\/p>\nIt started with him being an hour late “due to traffic”. While waiting the fans expressed their hatred of the mainstream media, “using language that is unpublishable”. A woman was seen holding a piece of paper with “We stand by you” on it. She later asked security to give it to Brand.<\/p>\n
Brand walked on-stage to the track “You Don’t Own Me”, a 1960s feminist anthem performed by American singer-songwriter Lesley Gore.<\/p>\n
He asked the crowd not to film him but expressed his thankfulness for the support. “I’ve got a lot of things to talk to you about. There are obviously some things that I absolutely cannot talk about and I appreciate that you will understand.”<\/i> Which was followed with laughter from the crowd. <\/p>\n
He apparently started the show well but was distracted throughout the second half, constantly referring to pieces of paper. At times it appeared he had lost his place, when he would resort to talking about “freedom”, “transcendence” and “authority”.<\/p>\n
He ended the show with a standing ovation lasting a few minutes. He seemed touched by the gesture before leaving the stage. The crowd seemed happy until they encountered he cameras and paparazzi outside. “We should kick you off your ladder,”<\/i> was one of the comments made in their direction.<\/p>\n
Brand still has more performances scheduled in the coming weeks and months.
