The payments giant was founded in 2010, so the fact that it\u2019s exploring avenues for exit isn\u2019t entirely surprising. But Stripe hasn\u2019t been immune to the global downturn, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/11\/03\/stripe-cuts-14-of-its-workforce-ceo-says-they-overhired-for-the-world-were-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laying off<\/a> 14% of its staff (around 1,120 people) and slashing its internal valuation <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/11\/stripe-internal-valuation-63-billion-409a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/07\/14\/stripe-fintech-payments-valuation-cut-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">times<\/a>. In a twist, Stripe reportedly tried to raise at least $2 billion in capital recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/stock-market-news-today-01-26-2023\/card\/stripe-held-talks-for-new-funding-at-60-billion-valuation-aHC2sG3rw0wXjoTotK4S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/25\/dell-has-acquired-cloud-orchestration-startup-cloudify-sources-tell-us-for-around-100m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dell bets on the cloud: <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ingridlunden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingrid<\/a> reports that Dell is making an acquisition to beef up its cloud services business \u2014 specifically its offering in DevOps. The company is buying <a href=\"https:\/\/cloudify.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cloudify<\/a>, an Israeli startup that has built a platform for cloud orchestration and infrastructure automation, sources say for as much as $100 million. The purchase comes as DevOps startups continue to attract attention from investors, with venture funding in the sector reaching $4 billion in Q2 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchbook.com\/newsletter\/why-the-devops-ecosystem-keeps-expanding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to PitchBook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/25\/after-inking-its-openai-deal-shutterstock-rolls-out-a-generative-ai-toolkit-to-create-images-based-on-text-prompts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Shutterstock embraces generative AI:<\/strong><\/a> As part of a partnership with OpenAI, the AI startup that recently <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/23\/microsoft-invests-billions-more-dollars-in-openai-extends-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attracted<\/a> a multibillion-dollar investment from Microsoft, Shutterstock this week rolled out a tool that lets customers create images based on text prompts. Powered by OpenAI\u2019s tech, specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/11\/03\/now-anyone-can-build-apps-that-use-dall-e-2-to-generate-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DALL-E 2<\/a>, the tool creates images that are \u201cready for licensing\u201d after they\u2019re made. That\u2019s significant given that one of Shutterstock\u2019s biggest competitors, Getty Images, is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.gettyimages.com\/en\/getty-images\/getty-images-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embroiled in a lawsuit<\/a> against Stability AI \u2014 maker of another generative AI service called Stable Diffusion \u2014 over using its images to train its AI without permission from Getty or rights holders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/26\/mark-cuban-brondell-acquires-shower-nebia-tim-cook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bidet brand buys shower startup:<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harrisonweber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harri<\/a> has the scoop on Brondell\u2019s purchase of Nebia, the techy showerhead startup backed by Apple CEO Tim Cook and a host of other big names, including Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. Nebia stood out when it launched with pricey nozzles that blasted users with a fine mist while conserving up to 70% of the water a typical showerhead sprays out. Co-founder Philip Winter told TechCrunch this week that Nebia\u2019s products, including those it made with Moen, have reached more than 100,000 homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/27\/google-created-an-ai-that-can-generate-music-from-text-descriptions-but-wont-release-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An AI maestro, unreleased:<\/a> <\/strong>An impressive new AI system from Google can generate music in any genre given a text description. But the company, fearing the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/27\/the-current-legal-cases-against-generative-ai-are-just-the-beginning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">risks<\/a>, has no immediate plans to release it. Called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/google-research.github.io\/seanet\/musiclm\/examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MusicLM<\/a>, the system was trained on a dataset of 280,000 hours of music to learn to generate coherent songs for descriptions like \u201cenchanting jazz song with a memorable saxophone solo and a solo singer\u201d or \u201cBerlin \u201990s techno with a low bass and strong kick.\u201d Its songs, remarkably, sound something like a human artist might compose, albeit not necessarily as inventive or musically cohesive.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/25\/elon-musk-twitter-antisemitic-hate-speech-lawsuit-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No rest for Musk\u2019s Twitter:<\/a> <\/strong>Twitter owner and self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1499976967105433600?s=20&amp;t=qvEZvuSZXmkvL8A9Oz9BXQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free-speech absolutist<\/a>\u201d Elon Musk is facing a legal challenge in Germany over how the platform is allegedly failing to enforce its own rules against antisemitic content, including Holocaust denial. Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany \u2014 which has strict laws prohibiting antisemitic hate speech \u2014 making the Berlin court a compelling arena to hear such a challenge. For his part, Musk has repeatedly claimed Twitter will respect all laws in the countries where it operates, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/31\/elon-musk-twitter-dsa-comply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including European speech laws<\/a>, although he has yet to make any public comment on this specific lawsuit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container__access-control\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/26\/hands-on-with-walmarts-new-but-buggy-text-to-shop-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Text till you drop:<\/strong><\/a> Walmart recently introduced a new way to shop via chatbot. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarahintampa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah<\/a> gave it a go and found that the experience leaves a lot to be desired. She writes: \u201cIt felt like the process of ordering a few basic things has become an ordeal and has taken a lot longer than the traditional method of searching in Walmart\u2019s app and adding things to the cart. If conversational commerce like this is the future, I\u2019d say this is very much still a work in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/25\/googles-flutter-showcases-new-graphics-capabilities-webassembly-and-risc-v-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Flutter toward the future:<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/flutter.dev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flutter<\/a>, Google\u2019s open source framework for building multiplatform apps for mobile, web and desktop, is coming along nicely. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fredericl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frederic<\/a> writes that at a recent conference, the tech giant highlighted the latest version of Flutter, which brings massively improved graphics performance, the ability to more easily embed Flutter code into existing web and mobile apps and support for new architectures like WebAssembly and RISC-V.<\/p>\n<h2>audio roundup<\/h2>\n<p>For your listening pleasure, TechCrunch has a crop of compelling new podcast episodes in the queue (as is the case weekly, might I add).
