Would I pay $20 a month to rent one that lives in the cloud? <em>Starfield<\/em> is the first game that\u2019s actually making me consider the possibility. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/13\/23871170\/starfield-geforce-now-nvidia-cloud-gaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Starfield<\/em> arrived on Nvidia\u2019s GeForce Now<\/a>, a service that lets you tap into an RTX 4080-equivalent GPU, and I spent a little time benchmarking the hard-to-run game. It absolutely looks and plays better than it did on my aging 1440p desktop, and looks great handheld.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It\u2019s not a silver bullet. I currently have wired gigabit fiber optic internet and live only a few towns over from Nvidia\u2019s west coast servers. Even then, the game doesn\u2019t currently run as smoothly as it does on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23855205\/starfield-pc-performance-benchmarks-hands-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the highest-end gaming PCs<\/a>. In the city of New Atlantis, I saw dips down to 47 and 48 frames per second no matter my graphics settings or resolution, because many worlds are fundamentally limited by your CPU speeds. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But in the cyberpunk core of Neon, I never saw a dip below 60fps at 4K resolution and Ultra spec, regardless of whether I simply walked through town or provoked a battle. It\u2019s <em>so<\/em> much smoother than my 5600X \/ 3060 Ti desktop machine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">(By default, GeForce Now sets the game to Ultra with FSR2 enabled, at 75 percent render resolution. I got 70-80fps in Neon\u2019s core that way \u2014 consistently 10fps higher than native resolution.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">On other worlds, and in lighter firefights, my cloud gaming framerate was far north of 60fps at Ultra spec. I do still need to test <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23855205\/starfield-pc-performance-benchmarks-hands-on#:~:text=Masada%20III%20when%20you%E2%80%99re%20in%20heavy%20combat%20during%20the%20later%20stages%20of%20the%20main%20mission%20line%20of%20the%20game.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Masada III<\/a>, though. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Right now, you\u2019re probably wondering about my headline. If it\u2019s so great, why\u2019s it also a \u201cworst way to play\u201d? How can it be \u201cbest\u201d if high-end PCs run the game better? I would be ashamed to put this free trial out into the world as a sample of cloud gaming.
