\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Oprah<\/strong><\/a> is opening up for first time about the backlash to the support fund<\/a> she and Dwayne Johnson<\/strong><\/a> launched in support of the victims from the recent Maui wildfires.<\/p>\n The two teamed up late last month, each pitching in $5 million each to get the fund started, that would directly support the residents of Lahaina and surrounding areas who had lost their homes to the wildfires.<\/p>\n However, Oprah <\/strong>revealed that she wasn\u2019t expecting the backlash to the fund that came after.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n During an interview on CBS Mornings<\/em>, Oprah <\/strong>revealed that she was inspired by Dolly Parton<\/strong><\/a>, who organized her own support fund to aid victims from the 2017 Gatlinburg, Tennessee, wildfires. <\/p>\n For that, Dolly <\/strong>had thrown a concert, and all proceeds were going to given directly to the families who had lost a significant amount of their homes and belongings. Many of them received $1,000<\/a> from Dolly <\/strong>herself. <\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the idea,\u201d Oprah <\/strong>said. \u201cGetting the money into the hands directly into the hands of the people set up the end structure for that.\u201d<\/p>\n However, she was not prepared for the backlash.<\/p>\n \u201cI was so excited,\u201d she added. \u201cI was so excited about it, and then I got up the next morning, and I saw all of this vitriol, and I was, like, \u2018Whoa, what happened here?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Many social media users called out both Oprah <\/strong>and Dwayne<\/strong> for asking other residents to donate their own money while they were also financially struggling.<\/p>\n Oprah <\/strong>is still standing behind the fund, saying that Dolly<\/strong>\u2018s initial idea combined with \u201cso many people were calling asking where do we give our money\u201d that the fund was launched. <\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to create something and I still think it\u2019s a really strong idea.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch the full interview below:<\/p>\n \n
