Diddy<\/strong><\/a> had his children by his side as he was honored with the Global Icon Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards<\/a> on Tuesday, September 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what\u2019s up. Love wins. This is so surreal, I appreciate you all coming and just even giving me my flowers and celebrating me,\u201d Diddy, 53, said in his lengthy acceptance speech. \u201cThis is a dream come true for me. I grew up watching MTV like, \u2018Man I wish one day I could be up there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Diddy shared that music wasn\u2019t always what he saw himself doing with his career. He entered the workforce at age 12 as a paperboy while dreaming of being a football player. However, after sustaining a leg injury, he began dancing and got noticed on the streets of New York City and was cast in music videos.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how I fell in love with the music industry,\u201d he shared while also thanking industry executives, songwriters and the Bad Boy Records family.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe 2023 MTV Video Music Awards have commenced \u2014 and the best names in music gave Us a fashion show on the red carpet.\u00a0 The annual ceremony took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday, September 12, marking a triumphant return to the venue. The event \u2014 which aired live on [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Before accepting his award, Diddy performed a medley of his greatest hits alongside several of his children<\/a>, including 25-year-old Christian (a.k.a King Combs). His eldest daughter Chance, 17, even joined Mary J Blige<\/strong><\/a> to give Diddy his golden moonperson Diddy\u2019s 16-year-old twins, Jessie and D\u2019Lila, also joined their dad on stage.<\/p>\n

The Global Icon Award is given to an artist or band who has achieved a unique level of worldwide success in the music industry. The honor originated at the MTV Europe Music Awards and, since launching at the VMAs in 2021, has been bestowed upon the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters.<\/p>\n

Diddy\u2019s performance<\/a> was the first time the rapper took the stage at the awards show for the first time since 2005, the same year he served as host. The rapper is set to release his first solo album since 2006, titled The Love Album: Off the Grid<\/em>, on Friday, September 15. The project features collaborations with high-profile names such as Justin Bieber<\/strong><\/a>, The Weeknd<\/strong><\/a> and Mary J. Blige<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Diddy announced his return to solo music in August via a trailer<\/a> for his upcoming album. \u201cWhy am I doing this?\u201d he asked. \u201cYou know what I\u2019m saying? Especially with the success that I\u2019ve had. Especially where my life is. How stressful and treacherous this music industry is, why would I just come back in here and have to do something that I don\u2019t have to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWe in the love era \u2014 that\u2019s the frequency that I\u2019m asking y\u2019all to be a part of. I had to go off the grid in order to really lock in \u2018cause I was so addicted to my phone, so addicted to the work, so addicted to the bulls\u2014t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diddy, who revealed in 2022 that he had legally changed his middle name<\/a> to Love, shared his desire to make an impact with his new music. \u201cI don\u2019t make an algorithm; I make a feeling,\u201d he said. \u201cYou wanna give \u2018em something that they can sing. People say, \u2018Do you want streams?\u2019 I said, \u2018I want souls.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
