A group of writers is suing OpenAI over claims the company illegally used their works to train its AI ChatGPT chatbot, as reported earlier by Reuters<\/em><\/a>. In a lawsuit filed on Friday<\/a>, Michael Chabon, David Henry Hwang, Rachel Louise Snyder, and Ayelet Waldman allege OpenAI benefits and profits from the \u201cunauthorized and illegal use\u201d of their copyrighted content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The lawsuit is seeking class-action status and calls out ChatGPT\u2019s ability to summarize and analyze the content written by the authors, stating this \u201cis only possible\u201d if OpenAI trained its GPT large language model on their works. It adds that these outputs are actually \u201cderivative\u201d works that infringe on their copyrights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOpenAI\u2019s acts of copyright infringement have been intentional, willful, and in callous disregard of Plaintiffs\u2019 and Class members\u2019 rights,\u201d the lawsuit claims. \u201cOpenAI knew at all relevant times that the datasets it used to train its GPT models contained copyrighted materials, and that its acts were in violation of the terms of use of the materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Chabon, the author of various books like The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay<\/em>, was among the over 10,000 authors who signed an open letter<\/a> that calls for OpenAI, Meta, Google, and other companies to \u201cobtain consent from, credit, and fairly compensate authors\u201d for use in the training of AI models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Additionally, this most recent lawsuit asks the court to stop OpenAI from engaging in \u201cunlawful and unfair business practices\u201d while awarding the authors damages related to copyright violations and other penalties. The Verge<\/em> reached out to OpenAI with a request for comment but didn\u2019t immediately hear back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
