Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin have worked together for decades<\/p>\n
The 73-year-old songwriter has worked with the ‘Philadelphia Freedom’ hitmaker since the 1960s and he insisted it doesn’t matter where in the world they are, they are always as close as ever.<\/p>\n
He told The Times magazine: \u201cAfter years of being together, we\u2019re just interconnected mentally. The geographical distance doesn\u2019t really matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pair speak every few days on FaceTime, but Bernie finds it “easier” to wait for Elton to call him.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201c[Yesterday he asked me,] \u2018What are you doing?\u2019 I said, \u2018Oh, I just went to get the car washed.\u2019 And he said, \u2018I just went out on the yacht.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n“He\u2019s on a very well-deserved vacation in the south of France with the family. I always let him call me; it\u2019s easier that way because of his schedule. I mean, I\u2019m just going to the gas station or the market and he\u2019s\u2026\u201d He chuckles. \u201cWell, he\u2019s Elton John.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe pair briefly parted ways professionally in the 1970s, but neither of them felt at ease working with other artists.<\/p>\n
\nBernie recalled: \u201cWe were both worn out. We\u2019d broken every record and filled every stadium in the country \u2014 where do you go from there? Probably drugs were involved in their height at that point…<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe both had that sense of jealousy. It\u2019s like the marriage thing: \u2018My partner\u2019s cheating on me.\u2019 \u201d <\/p>\n
\nIn their personal lives, Elton has two sons with husband David Furnish, while Bernie has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of the day he met fourth wife Heather, and the songwriter described them as an “army of four”.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cHeather and David are really close, because they both manage each of us. Everything\u2019s in-house now. We have nobody peripherally taking 50 per cent. We are basically an army of four.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBernie thinks it is possible he could be “dead by now” if he’d never met Elton.<\/p>\n
\nAsked what life would have been like if they’d never met, he said: \u201cProbably one of two things: I would have ended up driving a tractor and spending every night in the same pub for the rest of my life and be dead by now. Or I would have maintained my obsession with Americana and emigrated. I would like to think [the latter], because it shows more moxie in my personality.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd Elton insisted he wouldn’t have had the career he’s enjoyed without Bernie’s creative input.<\/p>\n
\nAsked the same question, he said: \u201cI\u2019d probably be working in WHSmith or a record store. [Our meeting] was serendipity on the biggest scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
