We also spotlight the federal investigation over Tesla\u2019s \u201csecret glass\u201d project, Elon Musk suing the Anti-Defamation League, Texas\u2019 efforts to enforce ID checks on porn sites and hacked male chastity cages (yes, really).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot to get to, so let\u2019s dive right in. Medobed, which promises medicine delivery in 10 minutes, was initially chosen for Y Combinator\u2019s S23 batch. But after it was discovered that Medobed\u2019s founder frequently altered his account of his educational history and the company\u2019s growth metrics, Y Combinator severed ties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YC Demo Day:<\/strong> In lighter YC news, this week was Y Combinator\u2019s Demo Day, a two-day livestream of startups presenting in the VC firm\u2019s latest cohort. We have roundups from <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/tag\/yc-demo-day-summer-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">both days<\/a> as well as a highlight of the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/06\/5-neat-ai-startups-from-y-combinators-winter-2023-batch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI startups<\/a> that stood out to us for their technical \u2014 or business \u2014 novelty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/05\/flipper-zero-hacking-iphone-flood-popups\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cheap iPhone tricks:<\/strong><\/a> Thanks to a popular and relatively cheap hacking tool, hackers can spam your iPhone with annoying pop-ups prompting you to connect to a nearby Apple device. A security researcher who asked to be referred to only as Anthony demonstrated this attack using a Flipper Zero, a small device that can be programmed to perform wireless attacks on devices in its range.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/02\/smart-chastity-cage-emails-passwords-location\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smart chastity cage hacked:<\/a> <\/strong>In other, more bizarre hacking news, the manufacturer of a penis chastity device that can be controlled by a partner over the internet exposed users\u2019 email addresses, plaintext passwords, home addresses and IP addresses, and \u2014 in some cases \u2014 GPS coordinates due to several flaws in its servers, according to a security researcher. Lorenzo has the full story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/31\/bumble-changes-its-policy-to-crack-down-on-bots-ghosting-and-doxing\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bumble cracks down on spam:<\/strong><\/a> Dating app company Bumble has released <a href=\"https:\/\/eu1.bumble.com\/guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated community guidelines<\/a> with the goal of cracking down on bots, spam, ghosting and doxing on both Bumble and Badoo, Bumble\u2019s alternative dating platform. Bumble is revamping its rules to weed out bots by banning actions like artificially influencing \u201cconnections, matching, conversations, or engagement through the use of automation or scripting,\u201d Ivan writes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/01\/lidl-recalls-paw-patrol-snacks-after-website-on-packaging-displayed-porn\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Paw Patrol snacks recalled over porn:<\/strong><\/a> U.K.-based supermarket giant Lidl has issued a recall of Paw Patrol snacks after the website listed on the products\u2019 packaging began displaying explicit content unsuitable for children. Affected products include Paw Patrol Yummy Bakes and Paw Patrol Mini Biscotti, snacks recommended for children aged two and above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/31\/texas-cannot-yet-enforce-id-checks-on-porn-sites\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Texas can\u2019t enforce online ID checks:<\/strong><\/a> A Texas judge issued an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5f28c184953ab91a0dc0daed\/t\/64f0b931ee3b4d24b7589fda\/1693497672102\/TXorderPI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injunction<\/a> this week to stall the enforcement of an online age verification bill. The Free Speech Coalition, along with adult video sites like Pornhub, led the legal challenge against Texas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/88R\/billtext\/html\/HB01181H.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB 1181<\/a>, arguing that the bill violates the First Amendment and infringes on rights guaranteed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/03\/the-supreme-court-takes-on-section-230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Section 230<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/01\/lenovo-debuts-gaming-glasses-and-portal-pc-handheld\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lenovo launches glasses and a handheld:<\/strong><\/a> At the annual IFA consumer electronics conference in Berlin, Lenovo unveiled the Legion Glasses, which starts at $329 and shares certain characteristics with Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/06\/05\/first-impressions-yes-apple-vision-pro-works-and-yes-its-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vision Pro<\/a>, Brian writes. Alongside it, Lenovo debuted the $699 Legion Go, its answer to Valve\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/07\/15\/valve-launches-steam-deck-a-400-pc-gaming-portable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steam Deck<\/a>, which is not only more powerful than the Steam Deck in terms of processing power but also boasts a higher-resolution, higher-refresh-rate screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/08\/30\/feds-investigate-teslas-use-of-funds-for-secret-glass-house-project-elon-musk\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feds investigate Tesla:<\/a><\/strong> Manhattan federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission are separately investigating the use of Tesla funds to bankroll a secret project that\u2019s described internally as a glass house in Austin, Texas, for CEO Elon Musk. Tesla board members are also reportedly involved in the investigation around the potential misuse of company resources on the project, known as \u201cProject 42,\u201d and whether Musk was personally involved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/04\/elon-musk-to-sue-adl-for-falsely-accusing-him-x-of-antisemitism\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Musk sues the ADL:<\/strong><\/a> If a federal investigation against Tesla wasn\u2019t enough, Musk says that X, formerly Twitter, will file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League, the nonprofit organization that works to combat antisemitism, extremism and bigotry. Musk accused the ADL of falsely accusing him and X, his company, of being antisemitic and also blamed the ADL for X\u2019s falling U.S. advertising revenue.<\/p>\n<h2>Audio<\/h2>\n<p>In need of a podcast or two to round out your playlist? Good news \u2014 TechCrunch has plenty to fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The newest episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equity<\/a> featured Michael Seibel, current YC partner and managing director of YC Early Stage, who discussed how Y Combinator evolved to meet a changed market, as well as the top trends from last year\u2019s summer batch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/found\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Found<\/a>, meanwhile, centered on Graham Hine, the co-founder and CEO of ePlant, a startup that creates sensors to monitor the health of trees. Hine talked about what got him interested in the tree space to begin with and what it was like transitioning to being a founder after working for years at a startup founded by his brother.<\/p>\n<p>And over at <a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/chainreaction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chain Reaction<\/a>, Charlie Shrem came on to discuss his work at the Bitcoin Foundation, which he founded, as well as his role as a general partner at Druid Ventures and host of the Charlie Shrem Show. And to get those investments, VCs have watched the accelerator\u2019s biennial Demo Days to get a peek at the startups that could go on to become the next Instacart or Airbnb. But anecdotally, some of the lore surrounding Demo Day \u2014 and YC in general \u2014 has faded in recent years, Rebecca writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/06\/tech-companies-are-finding-their-profitability-groove\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tech companies find their groove:<\/a><\/strong>Tech companies are getting the hang of making money \u2014 or at least they\u2019re losing far less than they used to when money was cheap and \u201cgrowth\u201d was sexy, Alex writes. He\u2019s seeing this happen across the tech sector: in enterprise software, fintech, and, heck, even in the tech-adjacent digital direct-to-consumer market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/07\/platforms-of-paranoia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>The business of paranoia:<\/b><\/a> Platforms like Nextdoor, Citizen and even the Ring doorbell app are the modern neighborhood watch.
