Bruce Springsteen<\/strong><\/a> found his \u201cJersey Girl\u201d in wife Patti Scialfa<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been together for 30 years. That\u2019s a long [time] \u2013 you\u2019ve shared a lot,\u201d Springsteen gushed during an October 2019 appearance on CBS Mornings<\/i><\/a>. \u201cYou know,<\/p>\n

Patti\u2019s been at the center of my life<\/a> for the entire second half of my life \u2026 and an enormous amount of guidance and inspiration<\/a> and you know, I can\u2019t overstate it. \u2026 I\u2019ve been lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS anchor Gayle King<\/strong> <\/a>subsequently cited a quote from Springsteen\u2019s Western Stars <\/i>concert film. \u201c\u2018We\u2019re always trying to find somebody whose broken pieces fit with our broken pieces, and something whole emerges,\u2019\u201d she recited. \u201cThat\u2019s beautifully said. What broken pieces are you working with still?\u201d<\/p>\n

Springsteen replied that said pieces are \u201call over\u201d by now<\/a>. \u201cI think you can\u2019t have deep experience without error, mistakes, pain. That\u2019s all just a part of human existence,\u201d the legendary vocalist added<\/a>. \u201cSo what does art do and music? Music is \u2013 it\u2019s a repair shop. So, I\u2019m basically a repairman, and I\u2019m trying to repair myself. If I do that well enough, I will help repair you while I\u2019m doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

1980s<\/b><\/h3>\n

In the early \u201880s, Springsteen ran into Scialfa at the Stone Pony bar in New Jersey. \u201cShe came out and played onstage with, it might have been Bobby Bandiera or, I forget which local band was playing,\u201d he recalled to The New York Times <\/i><\/a>in 2018. \u201cBut she came out and played the Exciters\u2019 hit \u2018Tell Him,\u2019 and she was very striking right from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after their meet-cute, Springsteen invited Scialfa to join his E Street Band<\/a> for the Born In The USA <\/i>tour.<\/p>\n

1988<\/b><\/h3>\n

The couple\u2019s romance did not become public until his divorce from first wife Julianne Phillips<\/strong> was settled.<\/p>\n

1990<\/b><\/h3>\n

Two years after going public with their relationship, they welcomed their first child. Son Evan was born in July.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is a gift you get from your children and from your wife,\u201d Springsteen, who was 40 at the time, told former president Barack Obama<\/strong><\/a> during a March 2021 episode of their \u201cRenegades<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cYour acknowledgment of a new self. And the realization of your manhood. It was huge. You know, I woke up. I felt as someone, not necessarily someone different, but someone so much further down the road than I thought maybe I\u2019d ever get.\u201d<\/p>\n

1991<\/b><\/h3>\n

Springsteen and Scialfa tied the knot in June 1991, shortly before the birth of daughter Jessica<\/a> that December. Jessica is now a professional equestrian, who won a silver medal at the 2021 Summer Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1994<\/b><\/h3>\n

Springsteen and Scialfa\u2019s youngest son, Sam, completed the family in January 1994. He is currently a firefighter<\/a> in the family\u2019s native New Jersey.<\/p>\n

2008<\/b><\/h3>\n

Scialfa was at Springsteen\u2019s side when he performed at a presidential campaign rally<\/a> for Obama.<\/p>\n

2017<\/b><\/h3>\n

Springsteen opened up to Variety <\/i><\/a>about working with his spouse. \u201cWe\u2019ve kind of developed natural boundaries. Some places we have a more professional approach, like if I walk into the studio while she\u2019s working, I have certain boundaries where if she requests my opinion or asks for my help, I give it on a very professional level,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen she comes onstage with the E Street Band, she\u2019s an E Street band member, and when we walk offstage we\u2019re husband and wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

2018<\/b><\/h3>\n

After Springsteen disclosed his struggles with depression, Scialfa stood by his side.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2018, the \u201cBorn in the USA\u201d singer also praised Scialfa as a mother. \u201c[Jessica] came with a set of tools that \u2014 and I have to credit most of this to Patti, because Patti was just very in tune with all the kids all the time \u2014 allowed her to make her way through the world in a very aware way,\u201d he said in an Esquire <\/i><\/a>profile. \u201cConsequently, there\u2019s a lot of bulls\u2014t she doesn\u2019t put up with. My daughter, she\u2019s really tough. \u2026 That came through Patti. Patti was very independent. So, she has a roaring independence that has served her very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Springsteen dedicated his Western Stars<\/i> record, and its accompanying concert film, to Scialfa. \u201cWe\u2019re always trying to find somebody whose broken pieces fit with our broken pieces, and something whole emerges,\u201d he said in the movie.<\/p>\n
