Remember when Lindsey Graham<\/strong><\/a> phoned up a top Georgia official after the 2020 election and suggested, according to that official, that mail-in ballots be thrown out\u2014which would have coincidentally benefited his good pal<\/a> Donald Trump,<\/strong> who made a similar, even more incriminating call<\/a> just weeks later? Well, on Friday, we learned that a special grand jury had recommended Graham be charged as part of the RICO case against Trump. His response? I was just doing my job!<\/em> Note: None of what the senator did is actually part of his job.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, Graham boldly claimed that he made a \u201cresponsible decision\u201d when he rang up Georgia secretary of state\u00a0Brad Raffensperger<\/strong>\u00a0in November 2020 for a chat about mail-in ballots. \u201cWhat I did was consistent with my job as being a United States senator, chairman of the Judiciary Committee,\u201d Graham told<\/a> reporters today. \u201cI think the system in this country is getting off the rails, and we have to be careful not to use the legal system as a political tool.\u201d\u00a0He added that he was shocked to learn that a special grand jury that met from June to December of last year\u2014and made charging recommendations to Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis<\/strong>\u2014had voted 13-7 that he should be prosecuted. \u201cI was totally surprised,\u201d Graham said, adding, \u201cI never suggested anybody set aside the election. I never said, \u2018go find votes.\u2019 I never said anything other than trying to find how the mail-in balloting system worked.\u201d<\/p>\n This content can also be viewed on the site it originates<\/a> from.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Of course, according to Raffensperger, Graham did not merely phone him up for a primer on how \u201chow the mail-in balloting system work[s].\u201d Rather, Raffensperger\u00a0has said<\/a>, Graham suggested throwing out all mail-in ballots in counties with high rates of nonmatching signatures. Speaking to The Washington Post<\/em> in 2020, Raffensperger said<\/a> he was stunned by the proposal. Luckily for Graham, his calls to the Georgia official were not recorded\u2014a factor that The New York Times<\/em> notes<\/a>, \u201cprobably figured in the decision not to charge\u201d\u00a0him. As for Graham\u2019s emphasis on the fact that he never told anyone to \u201cgo find votes,\u201d that\u2019s not actually something he\u2019s been accused of. But if he thinks such a demand sounds very bad and possibly illegal, he should be extremely worried about Trump<\/a>, who was, in fact, recorded saying that. (Editor\u2019s note: Trump is on tape telling Raffensperger, \u201cI just want to find 11,780 votes<\/a>,\u201d which is actually a lot worse given that it\u2019s the precise number he needed to overturn his loss in Georgia.)<\/p>\n Graham is not the only person the special grand jury recommended charging who ultimately got off scot-free.
