Now, Valve may be actually getting ready to ship at least one of its hardware ideas. South Korea\u2019s National Radio Research Agency has certified<\/a> a \u201clow power wireless device\u201d from Valve with the designation \u201cRC-V1V-1030,\u201d as spotted by @dxpl at Arca.live<\/a> (via Brad Lynch<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The South Korean certification tells us basically nothing about the device, save that it uses 5GHz Wi-Fi, which most computers already have at this point. It could be pretty much anything. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n But telecommunications regulatory agencies typically don\u2019t require certification for internal prototypes \u2014 only if you\u2019re going to import at least a small quantity of devices in a country, and maybe put them on sale. (For what it\u2019s worth, it looks like<\/a> the Valve Index was certified by South Korea days after<\/em> it was first announced.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Valve device has not yet appeared at the United States\u2019 FCC database, nor the Bluetooth SIG \u2014 and it may never appear at either one. Valve managed to get the Steam Deck past the FCC without being spotted early, by having its Wi-Fi \/ Bluetooth vendor Realtek re-certify the wireless module<\/em><\/a> rather than certifying the Steam Deck itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n There are other hints in Valve\u2019s own code, however \u2014 Phoronix<\/em>\u2019s Michael Larabel spotted<\/a> that Valve has added new changes around the Steam Deck\u2019s Van Gogh APU, including the mysterious product name \u201cGalileo\u201d and product family \u201cSephiroth.\u201d (Aerith, closely connected to Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII<\/em>, is another name for the Deck\u2019s APU<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<\/div>\n While Larabel initially suggests it might just be a Steam Deck refresh reference board, Valve\u2019s Greg Coomer told me in 2021<\/a> that the Steam Deck\u2019s existing APU might make sense in a standalone VR headset. A new Steam Controller gamepad wouldn\u2019t have an entire Steam Deck chip inside, though, so that seems less likely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not ready to say anything about it, but it would run well in that environment, with the TDP necessary… it\u2019s very relevant to us and our future plans,\u201d he told me. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
