Ethan Hawke<\/a> has declared himself to be a proud “nepo dad”.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Ethan and Maya Hawke have made a movie together<\/p>\n
The ‘Black Phone’ actor wrote and directed ‘Wildcat’, which is about US novelist Flannery O\u2019Connor, and though he cast his daughter Maya Hawke in the lead role, he insisted the 25-year-old actress was the driving force behind the project, though he understands why they may experience a backlash.<\/p>\n
He joked to Variety: \u201cPut simply, I\u2019m a nepo dad! And I\u2019m not embarrassed about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He then more seriously added: “If someone wants to criticise us for working together, that\u2019s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you\u2019re onstage.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ‘Little Women’ actress – who also served as a producer on ‘Wildcat’ – admitted she had “moments of insecurity” about being the director’s daughter but ultimately she enjoys working with the 52-year-old star.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI had moments of insecurity about it while we were shooting the movie.<\/p>\n
\n“But the internet doesn\u2019t have a lot of nuances. My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBoth Maya and Ethan were warned about working together but were baffled as to why people were concerned.<\/p>\n
\nMaya said: \u201cBefore we started, everyone was asking me, \u2018Are you nervous to work with your dad?\u2019 I hadn\u2019t thought to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEthan added: \u201cI started thinking, \u2018What am I not seeing? What am I missing?\u2019 But this is our safe place \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMaya continued: \u201c\u2026 making art together.”<\/p>\n
\nHer dad laughed: \u201cI mean, Thanksgiving? That\u2019s not so safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe ‘Stranger Things’ star – whose mother is Uma Thurman – initially tried to be more formal with her dad on set but soon realised she’d taken the wrong approach.<\/p>\n
\nShe recalled: \u201cI started using his name \u2014 \u2018Ethan\u2019 \u2014 to be like, ‘I\u2019m a professional.’<\/p>\n
\n“And then I realised it was actually more distracting to people. They\u2019d be like, \u2018Why are you doing that?\u2019 So I mostly called him \u2018Dad.\u2019 “<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
