Steve Harwell<\/strong>, the former lead vocalist of rock band Smash Mouth<\/strong>, died Monday at 56.<\/p>\n

Robert Hayes<\/strong>, a longtime manager of Harwell and the band, confirmed the singer\u2019s death in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve Harwell passed away this morning Sept. 4, 2023 at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably,\u201d Hayes said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cAnd the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hayes added: \u201cHis only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition. Steve lived a 100% full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.<\/p>\n

\u201cRest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n

Hayes revealed on Sept. 3, 2023, the singer was \u201cresting at home\u201d and \u201cbeing cared for by his fianc\u00e9e and hospice care.\u201d The rep adds that the family asks for \u201cprivacy during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

TMZ<\/a>, the first outlet to report the news, reported Harwell has \u201creached the final stage of liver failure\u201d due to alcohol.<\/p>\n

With hits \u201cWalkin\u2019 on the Sun,\u201d \u201cAll Star\u201d and a cover of \u201cCan\u2019t Get Enough of You Baby,\u201d Smash Mouth commandeered pop radio in the late \u201890s. Their quirky pop approach and Harwell\u2019s distinctive rumble of a voice distinguished the band from peers, including Sugar Ray<\/strong> and Third Eye Blind<\/strong>, and helped push their major-label debut, Fush Yu Mang,<\/em> to sell more than two million copies.<\/p>\n

Success would escalate for Smash Mouth with their second album, 1999\u2019s Astro Lounge<\/em>, which unveiled \u201cAll Star,\u201d a three-million-selling hit that reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains a pop culture touchstone.<\/p>\n

In October 2021, Harwell announced his retirement from the band following a fumbled performance at a beer and wine festival. During an appearance with the band at The Big Sip in New York, a video of Harwell slurring his speech, cursing at the audience, and making a gesture that resembled a Nazi salute, became viral.<\/p>\n

Following the performance, his reps said in a news release that the video had \u201cbeen taken out of context\u201d to misrepresent the singer. In a statement, Harwell\u2019s reps then revealed that the frontman had been battling health issues for the past eight years from his cardiomyopathy diagnosis.<\/p>\n

The heart disease led to \u201cserious medical setbacks\u201d for Harwell, including heart failure and acute Wernicke encephalopathy, which affected his speech and memory. According to his rep, Harwell \u201csuffered numerous symptoms\u201d from his medical condition during his performance in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn\u2019t able to,\u201d Harwell said in the news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cEver since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star, performing in front of sold-out arenas, and have been so fortunate to live out that dream,\u201d Harwell continued. \u201cTo my bandmates, it\u2019s been an honor performing with you all these years, and I can\u2019t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with. I cannot wait to see what Smash Mouth accomplishes next and am looking forward to counting myself as one of the band\u2019s newest fans.\u201d<\/p>\n
