One of\u00a0Miley Cyrus<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 earliest controversies was when she infamously danced on a \u201cstripper pole\u201d at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards<\/a> \u2014 except she didn\u2019t plan for it to cause a stir.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had cut \u2018Party in the USA\u2019 and I was doing my first performance for the Teen Choice Awards<\/a>,\u201d Cyrus, 30, said in a Friday, September 1, TikTok<\/a> video in her \u201cUsed to Be Young\u201d series. \u201cMy mom, [Tish Cyrus<\/strong><\/a>], was like, \u2018I think it\u2019d be really cool if she was in the trailer park because that\u2019s where we really do come from.\u2019 So, apparently, me dancing on an ice cream cart with a stripper pole [was part of that] \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t a stripper pole<\/a>, it was actually for stability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miley noted that she \u201chad a heel on\u201d<\/a> and simply wanted to stay balanced during the set. \u201cWhat did you want from me? Was I really gonna do my performance without dancing on top of an ice cream cart?\u201d she joked. \u201cThat performance was amazing. My pitch was, honestly, a little off and the hat needed to go, but besides that, [it was great].\u201d<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0Hannah Montana<\/i> <\/a>alum looked back at her 16-year-old self\u2019s performance<\/a>, she revisited a teen magazine article about the number at the time. \u201cIs Miley Turning Into the Next Britney [Spears]<\/strong><\/a>?\u201d she said in the Friday video, reading aloud the headline. \u201cHopefully! If God is good, which we know she is!\u201d<\/p>\n

After Miley\u2019s August 2009 set, she sparked backlash after viewers criticized the teenager<\/a> for gyrating on a pole and claiming that it was inappropriate for her age. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus<\/strong><\/a>, did not see an issue in her behavior.<\/p>\n
