The Goonies<\/em><\/a> may have debuted more than 30 years ago, but its legacy will live in the hearts of viewers forever.<\/p>\n The action-comedy film, directed by Richard Donner<\/strong><\/a>, hit theaters in June 1985 and follows the adventures of a group of kids from the Goon Docks area of Astoria, Oregon, who call themselves the Goonies. As their homes face foreclosure, the Goonies unite for one final weekend together \u2014 and discover a treasure map that changes everything.<\/p>\n Young actors like Sean Astin<\/strong><\/a>, Josh Brolin<\/strong><\/a> and Jeff Cohen<\/strong><\/a> shot to stardom thanks to the success of the quirky adventure movie, and still look back on their time filming The Goonies<\/em> with love. In October 2008, the cast got together to reflect on the impact this movie made on their lives \u00a0\u2014 and even admitted that they\u2019d fought hard to make a sequel<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe tried really hard, and Steven [Spielberg]<\/strong><\/a> said, \u2018Let\u2019s do it,’\u201d Donner explained to Variety<\/em><\/a> at the time. \u201cWe had a lot of young writers submit work, but it just didn\u2019t seem to call for it.\u201d The legendary director added that he\u2019d later thought about taking the film in a whole new direction by \u201ctrying to get it done as a musical on Broadway.\u201d<\/p>\n
