Selena Gomez<\/strong><\/a> opened up about how much her song \u201cWho Says\u201d means to her \u2014 and why she fought to sing it in the first place.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s actually a funny story: I was working with Disney<\/a> at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist,\u201d Gomez, 31, said while speaking at Twilio\u2019s SIGNAL conference<\/a> on Wednesday, August 23. \u201cAnd I cried \u2014 I remember, I was with my mom \u2014 because I loved the song so much.\u201d<\/p>\n While Gomez didn\u2019t reveal which musician was in line to receive the single she went on to explain why she told her label she would be the best person to perform it\u2019s powerful message of self-love<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI basically said to my label, \u2018I feel like my fans are young and they need it.\u2019 That\u2019s all I kept saying because I was 16 at the time,\u201d she said on Wednesday. \u201cI was like, \u2018I think my fans really need it; tell [them] my fans really need the song.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The 2011 song was the lead single off Gomez and her band The Scene\u2019s third album, When the Sun Goes Down<\/em>. The track \u2014 which ended up going platinum \u2014 was cowritten by Emanuel S. Kiriakou<\/strong> and Priscilla Renea Hamilton<\/strong>. Gomez shared on Wednesday that the song\u2019s message resonated with her and felt like \u201ca gift\u201d that she \u201cdid not know [she] needed.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I love, love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it,\u201d Gomez admitted.<\/p>\n In the ballad, Gomez sings about accepting yourself for who you are and ignoring the negative comments from others that diminish your self-worth.<\/p>\n \u201cWho says \/ Who says you\u2019re not perfect \/ Who says you\u2019re not worth it \/ Who says you\u2019re the only one that\u2019s hurting \/ Trust me \/ That\u2019s the price of beauty \/ Who says you\u2019re not pretty \/ Who says you\u2019re not beautiful \/ Who says,\u201d Gomez sings.<\/p>\n While discussing her third album\u2019s tracklist with Billboard<\/a> in 2011, Gomez gushed about \u201cWho Says.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s probably my favorite I\u2019ve ever recorded,\u201d she confessed at the time. \u201cI think it\u2019s really meaningful and it\u2019s kind of a big anthem. It went platinum so it\u2019s my second song ever that\u2019s platinum. I was really excited, I was in the car when I found out promoting the third album. It gave me a big boost.\u201d<\/p>\n Recently, Gomez announced she would be returning to the music world<\/a> with a new solo single<\/a> while she works on her upcoming solo album.
