A story of boy meets girl. The 2009 film 500 Days of Summer<\/em> has a bittersweet ending, but that hasn\u2019t stopped it from earning a spot in the romantic comedy canon<\/a>.<\/p>\n Directed by Marc Webb<\/strong>, the movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/strong><\/a> as Tom, an architect who works as a writer of greeting cards. When a new employee named Summer (Zooey Deschanel<\/strong><\/a>) starts at the company, the pair hit it off after discovering they have similar tastes in music. Summer warns Tom that she\u2019s not interested in a serious relationship, but he pursues her anyway.<\/p>\n Summer later breaks up with Tom, who spirals into a depression because he believed she was The One. Eventually, however, he picks up the pieces and interviews for a position at an architecture firm, where he meets a woman named Autumn (Minka Kelly<\/strong><\/a>). The film ends as the pair begin their first date, hinting that Tom is about to get a second chance at love.<\/p>\n While fans have joked over the years that they can\u2019t forgive Summer for breaking up with Tom, Gordon-Levitt himself has pointed out that Deschanel\u2019s character isn\u2019t the only person at fault in the story. \u201cWatch it again. It\u2019s mostly Tom\u2019s fault,\u201d the Looper<\/em> actor tweeted in 2018. \u201cHe\u2019s projecting. He\u2019s not listening. He\u2019s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end.\u201d<\/p>\n The 3rd Rock From the Sun<\/em><\/a> alum has also said that Tom\u2019s behavior isn\u2019t exactly the sort of affection he thinks viewers should aspire to in their own lives. \u201cThe 500 Days of Summer<\/em> attitude of, \u2018He wants you so bad\u2019 seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones,\u201d Gordon-Levitt told Playboy<\/em> in 2012. \u201cBut I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is.\u201d<\/p>\n When the movie made its debut on Hulu in May 2021, Deschanel reminded viewers not to be too judgmental<\/a> of Summer. \u201c500 Days of Summer<\/em> is now available to watch on @hulu! So taking the time now to say once again, Summer isn\u2019t the villain,\u201d the New Girl alum wrote via Instagram at the time. \u201cHappy watching!\u201d<\/p>\n While the film stands alone, the She & Him songstress<\/a> revealed in June 2019 that she and Gordon-Levitt have actually talked about making a second movie<\/a>. \u201cJoe and I always talked about doing a sequel,\u201d she told PureWow<\/em><\/a> at the time, adding that she wasn\u2019t sure if it would \u201cever\u201d happen. \u201cWe never quite figured it out because we thought it would be fun to do 500 Days of Tom<\/em> from Summer\u2019s point of view. The movie is so from Tom\u2019s point of view. So, we thought it would be interesting to see her point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n
