Dax Shepard<\/strong><\/a> admitted that he\u2019s been feeling some self-doubt about his future amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA<\/a> and WGA strikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n Shepard, 48, discussed the situation during the Monday, August 21, episode of his \u201cArmchair Expert\u201d podcast with guest Jason Derulo<\/strong><\/a>, who was talking about the way \u201cmoney fights\u201d can cause \u201cturmoil\u201d in relationships.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I was a kid, my parents would fight all the time about money,\u201d Derulo recalled. \u201cIn the back of my mind, I\u2019d be like. \u2018I\u2019m gonna fix this.\u2019 I thought that I would be the savior of the problems that they had.\u201d<\/p>\n Derulo noted that his parents still argued after money became less tight, which helped him learn that finances aren\u2019t always the root cause of disagreements. Shepard agreed, relating the feelings he\u2019s been experiencing since the Screen Actors Guild \u2013 American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike in July.<\/p>\n \u201cI am currently in a, like, two-month spiral of just completely out of hand financial insecurity,\u201d Shepard said. \u201cThis new fear of, \u2018I\u2019m gonna somehow be broke or I\u2019m gonna lose everything, podcasting is gonna be over, there\u2019s an actors strike and I\u2019m not gonna act.\u2019 It\u2019s so foundationless, it\u2019s preposterous.\u201d<\/p>\n Shepard went on to say that he thinks this fear comes from his childhood rather than the facts of his day-to-day life as a successful entertainer. \u201cIt\u2019s not related to reality,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s from growing up poor. I just can\u2019t shake it. So, to your point, you watch your parents fight about money, you think money\u2019s the problem. But money\u2019s not the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n Derulo agreed, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s not. It\u2019s way deeper rooted.\u201d<\/p>\n SAG-AFTRA voted to strike in July<\/a> after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers stalled. The main issues at stake include the use of artificial intelligence in film and TV projects and the relatively low residual payments actors receive for streaming compared to traditional broadcast models of TV.<\/p>\n Many actors have spoken out about the decreases in their residual payments as streaming has become a more dominant platform for watching movies and TV. Kendrick Sampson<\/strong>, for example, said last month that he recently received 56 residual checks<\/a> totaling less than $100.<\/p>\n \u201cI prayed that these are HEALTHY checks to get me through this time,\u201d the 35-year-old actor, who\u2019s appeared on Insecure<\/em> and How to Get Away With Murder<\/em>, wrote via Instagram. \u201cBut lo and behold \u2014 50 (yes FIFTY! FIVE, ZERO) checks into counting, I had to take a break because \u2026 the total was $86. This is that bulls\u2013t. And I KNOW people are struggling much more than me!\u201d<\/p>\n The Writers Guild of America has been striking since May over many of the same issues. Earlier this month, former Suits<\/em><\/a> writers Lilla<\/strong> and Nora Zuckerman<\/strong> slammed Netflix for the small payments<\/a> they\u2019ve received as the USA Network series became a huge streaming hit this summer.<\/p>\n In 2016, Lilla \u201creceived $12,568.57 in residuals\u201d for the season 5 episode \u201cBlowback,\u201d which premiered in January of that year. \u201cI imagine it was probably being sold internationally and re-airing on USA,\u201d she told Decider<\/em>. \u201cThis year, 2023, where Suits<\/em> has been viewed for billions and billions of hours on Netflix, I received the grand total of $414.26 on that episode.\u201d<\/p>\n Nora, for her part, added, \u201cYou hope that maybe some magical check will arrive, but it does not appear. \u2026 It\u2019s been pretty sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
