California has significantly expanded a pilot program allowing citizens to get a digital driver\u2019s license \/ identification card that\u2019s accessible on their mobile phones (via 9to5Mac<\/em><\/a>). The digital ID, which the California DMV is calling an \u201cmDL\u201d (mobile driver\u2019s license), can be used for things like getting through airport security or proving your age when buying alcohol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n If you choose to sign up for the state\u2019s digital IDs, there\u2019s a few caveats to be aware of. The DMV stresses that you\u2019ll still need to carry your physical ID or driver\u2019s license given that \u201claw enforcement, state government agencies, and businesses aren\u2019t yet accepting the mDL.\u201d Only some airports<\/a> and a handful of retail locations<\/a> support them. The DMV promises<\/a> that the app \u201cdoes not permanently store your personal data,\u201d but it does keep your phone number and an \u201cencrypted photo of your DL\/ID card.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n And California isn\u2019t letting citizens add a digital ID to iOS<\/a> or Android\u2019s<\/a> native wallets; instead, you have to use California\u2019s dedicated app. \u201cAt this time mDL is not available for Apple or Google wallets,\u201d the DMV says. \u201cHowever, additional platforms will be available in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
