The service that provided the checks, called Garbo, is shutting down its consumer-facing business as a result.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Match Group first started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/15\/22327854\/match-group-garbo-tinder-background-check-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offering background checks on Tinder in 2021<\/a> before rolling it out to its other dating apps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/12\/23205789\/match-stir-free-background-checks-tinder-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including Match and Stir, last year<\/a>. The integration let users run a limited number of free background checks on a potential date using just their last name and phone number, allowing users to see public reports about violence, past arrests, convictions, and restraining orders. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">While it\u2019s not clear what went wrong between the two companies, Garbo appears to place the blame on Match Group. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garbo.io\/blog\/next-phase-at-garbo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a post on Garbo\u2019s blog<\/a>, founder Kathryn Kosmides says she made the decision to shut down the service after facing \u201ca lack of support and real initiative from online platforms\u201d as well as \u201ccontinuous harassment and threats by bad actors on these platforms.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cMost social networks, dating apps and online platforms care more about the bottom-line\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">According to the <em>Journal<\/em>, there were also some internal conflicts about how the background checks should work. While Match Group reportedly wanted to display a badge on people\u2019s Tinder profiles to signal they had clean criminal histories, Kosmides disagreed, telling the <em>Journal,<\/em> \u201cYou can\u2019t white-list someone or give them a \u2018good guy, bad guy\u2019 identity verification.\u201d The <em>Journal<\/em> also points out that Tinder never really advertised the background checks to its users and that it was never made available within the Tinder app on iOS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cIt\u2019s become clear that most online platforms aren\u2019t legitimately committed to trust and safety for their users,\u201d Kosmides says. \u201cThere are some great companies that do take our mission to heart, but the sad reality is that most social networks, dating apps and online platforms care more about the bottom-line than they care about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The partnership\u2019s discontinuation comes almost one year after Tracey Breeden, Match Group\u2019s first head of safety and social advocacy who also spearheaded the partnership with Garbo, left the company. Despite Match Group and Garbo ending their partnership, Match Group says it has plans to find a new background check provider.
