His emails to staff that month discussed the importance of a demonstration drive to promote the system.<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s direct involvement in the video, and subsequent promotion of Tesla vehicles\u2019 abilities to drive themselves, comes at a time when the executive\u2019s reputation and trustworthiness are increasingly at stake. In addition to his Twitter distractions, Musk also promised during Tesla\u2019s Q3 investor call that the automaker would have an \u201cepic end of year,\u201d yet Tesla ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/02\/tesla-delivers-405278-vehicles-in-q4-missing-wall-street-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missing Wall Street Q4 delivery estimates<\/a>. On top of that, the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/20\/tesla-stock-plunges-as-investors-fear-twitter-dramas-loss-of-china-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">company\u2019s stock was down 65% in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Musk is also poised to take the stand this week in a class-action lawsuit from shareholders who say his <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/01\/18\/musk-stands-to-lose-billions-in-trial-over-funding-secured-tweet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infamous 2018 tweet<\/a> claiming that funding had been secured to take the company public \u2014 it wasn\u2019t \u2014 caused them to lose potentially billions of dollars. The jury will determine whether Musk knowingly, and thus fraudulently, claimed secured funding when it hadn\u2019t been.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018An amazing Autopilot demo drive\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>On October 11, Musk sent an email under the subject line \u201cThe Absolute Priority\u201d letting the Autopilot team know that he had canceled his plans for the upcoming weekend to work on the video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust want to be absolutely clear that everyone\u2019s top priority is achieving an amazing Autopilot demo drive,\u201d Musk said in the email, according to Bloomberg. \u201cSince this is a demo, it is fine to hardcode some of it, since we will backfill with production code later in an OTA update,\u201d he wrote, referring to the use of a 3D digital map that the Model X used to follow a pre-determined route.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will be telling the world that this is what the car *will* be able to do, not that it can do this upon receipt,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Despite that promise, the internal emails show that Musk himself asked the Autopilot team to open the video with the words: \u201cThe person in the driver\u2019s seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything.
