Red, White and Royal Blue<\/em><\/a> director Matthew L\u00f3pez<\/strong> was able to bring one of the book\u2019s most \u201cmagical\u201d moments to screen, and it ended up being his favorite part of his debut film.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really loved doing the V and A scene,\u201d the Tony Award winner exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cI loved being in that museum. We got to take over that museum for a night. We got in there at about 9:30 in the evening, and we left at sunrise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scene in the Amazon Studios movie, based on Casey McQuiston<\/strong>\u2018s 2021 novel Red, White and Royal Blue,<\/em>\u00a0takes place in London\u2019s Victoria and Albert Museum. Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine<\/strong><\/a>) suddenly left Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez<\/strong><\/a>), son of the first female President of the United States (Uma Thurman<\/strong><\/a>), with no explanation. Alex flies to England to confront Henry and figure out why the man he loves ghosted him.<\/p>\n

When Alex arrives, he learns Henry is torturing himself because he loves Alex but doesn\u2019t believe he can ever be an out-and-proud gay man without turning his back on the royal family.<\/p>\n

He takes Alex to the V and A, explaining that his late father brought him in the early mornings to see the art before the crowds and now he visits in the middle of the night. \u201cWhen I was younger, I\u2019d dream of taking somebody I loved here, and he\u2019d love it as much as I did. And we\u2019d dance right here amidst all those statues. Just a daft pubescent fantasy,\u201d Henry says.<\/p>\n

Alex \u2014 who has a playlist for everything \u2014 pulls out his phone and plays \u201cCan\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u201d by Perfume Genius. He and Henry enjoy a slow dance among the sculptures.<\/p>\n

Henry declares that he wants to make their relationship work. \u201cWhen they write the history of my life, I want it to include you and my love for you,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Alex replies with the most memorable line<\/a> from McQuiston\u2019s Red, White and Royal Blue<\/em> book: \u201cHistory, huh? Bet we could make some.\u201d<\/p>\n

For L\u00f3pez, recreating the scene from the page was unforgettable. \u201cThere\u2019s just something magical about being at a museum after hours, long after all the other patrons have left,\u201d the director told Us<\/em>. \u201cTo be able to create that beauty between those two characters visually and emotionally was very easy in some ways to do, because we were in the actual space that it was set in the book. And that kind of gave us goosebumps.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that it while the story is all about Alex and Henry\u2019s romance among these iconic locations, they weren\u2019t actually able to visit most of them. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t shoot in the actual Buckingham Palace. We couldn\u2019t shoot in the actual White House, of course \u2014 but we were able to shoot in the actual V and A in exactly the spot that Casey set that scene in,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd so that for us was pretty magical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red, White and Royal Blue<\/em> debuted Friday, August 11, on Prime Video.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
