Like a lot of book-to-movie adaptations, not everything from the Red, White and Royal Blue<\/em> novel made it into its film adaptation.<\/p>\n Taylor Zakhar Perez<\/strong><\/a> and Nicholas Galitzine<\/strong><\/a> star as enemies-turned-lovers Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry, respectively, in the Prime Video rom-com, which premiered on Friday, August 11. In order to tell the First Son of the United States and Prince of England\u2019s love story properly, director Matthew L\u00f3pez<\/strong> explained to Us Weekly<\/em><\/a> that some things from Casey McQuiston<\/strong>\u2019s 2019 novel of the same name had to go.<\/p>\n \u201cI watched the movie for the first time at the three-hour version of the movie that I first was given by my editor \u2014 and everything that wasn\u2019t Alex and Henry had to go,\u201d he exclusively told Us<\/em>. \u201cMy job as the filmmaker is to deliver Alex and Henry safely on to the end of the film. There\u2019s about less than 20 seconds of the movie in which either one of them doesn\u2019t appear.\u201d<\/p>\n L\u00f3pez continued: \u201cWhen you set for yourself that goal of serving that journey for those two characters, it actually becomes very, very clear what belongs and what doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n Scroll below to see what parts of the Red, White and Royal Blue<\/em> novel didn\u2019t make the movie cut:\n<\/p>\n With the story\u2019s main focus on Alex and Henry\u2019s love story, many of the book\u2019s side characters\u2019 roles were toned down in the film. Secret Service agent Amy (Aneesh Sheth<\/strong>), Henry\u2019s best friend, Percy (Malcolm Atobrah<\/strong>), and Henry\u2019s sister, Princess Beatrice (Ellie Bamber<\/strong>), all had far less prominent roles than their book counterparts.<\/p>\n Some characters were seemingly combined with others completely cut from the movie adaptation. In addition to being Alex\u2019s best friend, Rachel Hilson<\/strong>\u2019s Nora Holleran shared many similarities with Alex\u2019s sister in the book, June, who did not appear in the film. June and Percy\u2019s flirty relationship was instead given to Nora.<\/p>\n Though the characters of Alex\u2019s mentor, Senator Rafael Luna, and Alex\u2019s childhood best friend, Liam, are not featured in the film, Alex is given a new friend in the form of journalist Miguel Ramos (Juan Castano<\/strong>).<\/p>\n Other cut characters include another Secret Service member named Cash and Henry\u2019s mother, Princess Catherine, though the latter is mentioned in the film.<\/p>\n One of the biggest character differences between the RWRB<\/em> book and film is the switch from having a King versus a Queen of England. \u201cThere were two reasons. One, I was trying to really differentiate as much as possible our fictional royal family from the actual royal family,\u201d L\u00f3pez exclusively explained to Us<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n Stephen Fry<\/strong> takes on the role of King James III in the Prime Video adaptation, whereas the monarch in the book is Henry\u2019s grandmother Queen Mary. The change from queen to king was made prior to the death of Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> in September 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cBetween King Charles<\/strong><\/a>, Prince William<\/strong><\/a>, Prince George<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 for most of our lifetime, there will always be King of England,\u201d L\u00f3pez added. \u201cAnd so, I wanted to sort of make sure that the film in some ways made sense to people for a hundred years.\u201d<\/p>\nNew, Missing and Changed Characters<\/h3>\n
