It\u2019s hard to imagine anyone else starring in the titular role of Barbie \u2014 but Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> initially thought Gal Gadot<\/strong><\/a> was the woman for the job.\u00a0<\/span> \u201cI adore Margot,\u201d Gadot, 38, told Flaunt<\/em> <\/a>magazine in an interview published on Friday, August 11, about being Robbie\u2019s top choice for the Barbie<\/em> <\/a>movie. \u201cMargot is one of those women who you just want to be friends with. She brings so much to the table. I would love to do anything with Margot and was very touched [by her comments]. She warmed my heart with everything that she said about me. I\u2019m super excited for them<\/a>, and I\u2019m so excited for Barbie.\u201d<\/span> While Gadot couldn\u2019t star as Barbiel herself, her personality ended up being the blueprint for both the casting directors and Robbie, 33, while searching for the perfect actors to play each doll in BarbieLand.\u00a0<\/span> \u201cGal Gadot is Barbie energy,\u201d Robbie told Vogue<\/em> <\/a>in May. \u201cBecause Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don\u2019t hate her for being that beautiful because she\u2019s so genuinely sincere, and she\u2019s so enthusiastically kind, that it\u2019s almost dorky. It\u2019s like right before being a dork.\u201d<\/span> While Robbie \u2014 who also serves as executive producer on the film \u2014 eventually went on to play the titular role, she didn\u2019t even consider casting herself in the part until director Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> joined the project. (Gerwig, 40, also cowrote the script with partner Noah Baumbach<\/strong><\/a>.)<\/span> \u201cI said to her when she said, \u2018Yes, I\u2019ll come on board,\u2019 \u2018I don\u2019t have to be in the movie,’\u201d Robbie told Teen Vogue<\/em><\/a> in July. \u201cI\u2019m very passionate about making this as a producer, but I don\u2019t have to play Barbie or be in the movie in any capacity, I\u2019m happy just to produce.\u201d<\/span> Greta, however, already had a vision of Robbie donning the signature pink heels<\/a>. \u201cShe was like, \u2018No, I really wanna write this for you. And she wrote me an amazing part, so I\u2019m very grateful,\u201d Robbie recalled.\u00a0<\/span> Along with Robbie, there was another role pre-cast in Gerwig\u2019s mind \u2014 Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a> as Ken.<\/span> \u201cShe wrote him into the script as well. It always said in the script: \u2018Barbie, Margot\u2019 and \u2018Ken, Ryan Gosling,\u2019\u201d Robbie explained, adding that the two women \u201cwouldn\u2019t take no for an answer\u201d from Gosling, 42. \u201cWe\u2019re like, \u2018Ryan, you have to come do it. It\u2019s on the page, you have to,\u2019\u201d she quipped.\u00a0<\/span> Still, Robbie had one big ask before<\/a> stepping on set.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u201cIf [Mattel] hadn\u2019t made that change to have a multiplicity of Barbies, I don\u2019t think I would have wanted to attempt to make a Barbie<\/em> film,\u201d she said during an interview with TIME<\/em><\/a> magazine in June. \u201cI don\u2019t think you should say, \u2018This is the one version of what Barbie<\/em> is<\/a>, and that\u2019s what women should aspire to be and look like and act like.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Robbie headlines the film as the \u201cstereotypical\u201d blonde, pink-clad Barbie most familiar to fans, but the cast includes various other stars playing different versions of Barbie. Issa Rae, for example, portrays President Barbie,\u00a0 while Alexandra Shipp<\/strong> is Writer Barbie and Hari Nef<\/strong> is Doctor Barbie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMy worry was that it was going to feel too white feminist-y, but I think that it\u2019s self-aware,\u201d Rae, 38, told TIME<\/em> of the film. \u201cBarbie Land is perfect, right? It represents perfection.
