For over a month now, we\u2019ve been treated to a torrent of evidence that newly elected congressman George Santos<\/strong> is a serial liar. From supposedly being a star volleyball player at a college he never attended to having grandparents who fled Hitler, almost every day has brought a new lie. And now, we can add flagrant hypocrisy to the mix.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, journalist Marisa Kabas<\/strong> reported<\/a> that as a teen living in Brazil, Santos \u201cenjoyed\u201d\u00a0drag, participated in at least one drag show, and went by the name \u201cKitara Ravache.\u201d<\/p>\n Unlike Santos\u2019s very large dossier of lies, there is absolutely nothing wrong with dressing in drag or expressing oneself however one sees fit. The problem, of course, is that Santos apparently does not think other people should be afforded such rights. As The New York Times<\/em> notes<\/a>, Santos has \u201cembraced right-wing policies that many LGBTQ activists have decried as discriminatory.\u201d For example, Florida\u2019s bigoted \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d\u00a0law, which the then candidate \u201cvoiced support for\u201d in an April 2022 Facebook video, saying, \u201cHey, everyone. George Santos here\u2026. As a gay man, I stand proudly behind not teaching our children sex or sexual orientation.\u201d (The law prohibits teachers in grades K\u20133 from discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in any way whatsoever, and has led to educators being warned<\/a> to not to wear clothing with rainbows on them and to get rid of \u201csafe space\u201d stickers and photos of their same-sex spouses out of fear of being prosecuted.) In the accompanying caption, Santos claimed Democrats want to \u201cgroom our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n In his first weeks in Congress, Santos has also aligned<\/a> himself<\/a> with the far right, whose members have demonized<\/a> drag shows<\/a> and introduced appalling anti-trans legislation<\/a>.<\/p>\n Prior to being elected, Santos worked as a spokesman for Carl Paladino,<\/strong> an elected official who, per the Times,<\/em> has \u201ca track record of racist and homophobic comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
