Francia Raisa<\/strong>\u00a0has revealed she\u2019s been living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome after donating one of her kidneys<\/a> to\u00a0Selena Gomez<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2017. She made the revelation in a Monday, August 7, Instagram Story while congratulating friend\u00a0Candice Craig<\/strong>\u00a0for her book,\u00a0Living With PCOS: Road to Reversal.<\/em><\/p>\n While showing a video from the book launch brunch, Francia, 35, was seen celebrating the release with other pals while writing,\u00a0\u201cMy friend wrote a book about PCOS.\u201d In another post she added, \u201cI also have PCOS and still learning how to live with it.\u201d It\u2019s unclear when Francia received her diagnosis.<\/p>\n According to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>, PCOS occurs when \u201csmall sacs of fluid develop along the outer edge of the ovary\u201d known as cysts. \u201cThe small fluid-filled cysts contain immature eggs. These are called follicles. The follicles fail to regularly release eggs.\u201d In addition to making getting pregnant more difficult, PCOS can cause irregular periods, with some lasting for up to nine days while others occurring more than a month apart.<\/p>\n Other stars who have spoken out about their diagnosis with PCOS include Lea Michele<\/strong><\/a>, Keke Palmer<\/strong><\/a> and Jillian Michaels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Francia made headlines in 2017 when she donated a kidney in a life-saving procedure<\/a> for longtime friend Selena. She detailed how her recovery was far more difficult that it was for the \u201cWolves\u201d singer.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s harder as the donor because we are losing something our body didn\u2019t need to lose, so [I was] trying to recover from that [while] she\u2019s gaining something her body needed,\u201d she explained in a February 2018 interview with Harry Connick Jr<\/strong>., calling the experience\u00a0\u201cvery humbling\u201d as she was unable to take care of herself.<\/p>\n \u201cI basically have four scars. It was laparoscopic. I couldn\u2019t get up without having someone help me \u2026 I couldn\u2019t take a shower by myself, I had to have someone help me because I couldn\u2019t move,\u201d the Fired Up!<\/em> star revealed.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, so our surgery was in June, our fans didn\u2019t find out about it until September. We wanted that privacy. It was a big surgery,\u201d Francia continued. \u201c[Selena] felt bad about even having me do that because we are just friends, I am not her family or anything. Well, I am now. She has my blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Francia and Selena kept news of the transplant secret for three months until the \u201cLose You to Love Me\u201d songstress revealed the surgery in a September 2017 Instagram post. She wrote, \u201cThere aren\u2019t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,\u201d featuring a photo of them holding hands and lying down in hospital beds. \u201cShe gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much, sis.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Francia and Selena had been best friends since childhood when they both starred on Disney Channel shows. Due to the\u00a0Only Murders in the Building<\/em>\u00a0star\u2019s battle with Lupus, she needed a new kidney and her pal happened to be a perfect match.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Life-Size 2<\/em>\u00a0star shot down rumors she felt pressured to give Selena one of her kidneys in an August 1, 2023, interview. \u201cI just felt it in my heart. I knew it was a match, I knew it was going to happen. No one forced me to do anything,\u201d Francia said on an episode of\u00a0the \u201cGood Guys\u201d podcast<\/a>, adding, \u201cIt came out of the genuine kindness of my heart. I have been super blessed ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
