The couple first met in 1983 when they were set up on a blind date<\/a>. While they didn\u2019t initially hit it off, the Parks and Recreation<\/em><\/a> alum and the makeup artist reconnected several years later on the set of 1990\u2019s Bad Influence<\/em>, which is where their romance blossomed.<\/p>\n

The film may have been called Bad Influence<\/em>, but the St. Elmo\u2019s Fire<\/em> star has frequently praised Berkoff for having an incredible, life-changing impact on him.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Our relationship] made me examine how I was living my life,\u201d the \u201cLiterally! with Rob Lowe\u201d podcast host told Haute Living<\/em><\/a> in March 2014 of the beginning of his romance with the jewelry designer. \u201cThat led me to getting sober, which led me to changing my life \u2014 giving me everything I now have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lowe has long been open about his battle with substance abuse, and he frequently discusses how being in recovery \u2014 he\u2019s been sober for more than 30 years<\/a> \u2014 has made his life rich and plentiful.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the great gifts of recovery is that you start living your authentic life,\u201d the Outsiders<\/em> star told Variety<\/em><\/a> in February 2021. \u201cYou start living your actual values and living as who you truly are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to dating, both Lowe and Berkoff had been in relationships with other famous faces.<\/p>\n

The 9-1-1 Lonestar<\/em> lead dated Melissa Gilbert<\/strong><\/a> for seven years between 1980 and 1987, proposing in 1986. The two called off their engagement, and the Little House on the Prairie<\/em> star wrote in her 2009 memoir, Prairie Days<\/em>, that she had suffered a miscarriage. \u201cI had lost my baby and my relationship with Rob \u2026 and it hurt like hell,\u201d she revealed. Lowe was rumored to have dated Winona Ryder from 1986 to 1988.<\/p>\n

For her part, Berkoff reportedly dated her future husband\u2019s fellow \u201cBrat Pack\u201d<\/a> member, Emilio Estevez<\/strong><\/a>, in the 1980s.
