Mattel is unveiling a new doll inspired by Kate McKinnon<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s role in the Barbie<\/em> film<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Weird Barbie \u2014 which can do crazy splits just like McKinnon\u2019s character of the same name \u2014 is a $50 made-to-order doll now on pre-sale via Mattel Creations<\/a>. The doll\u2019s choppy hairstyle and markings on her face emulate a doll that\u2019s been \u201cplayed with too much.\u201d<\/p>\n Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a>, who directed the movie and cowrote it with her partner, Noah Baumbach<\/strong><\/a>, explained the idea behind Weird Barbie during a July interview with Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe grew up in a neighborhood where there were a lot of girls older than me. So, I had a lot of hand-me-down Barbies that had already gotten a haircut by the time I got them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n McKinnon, 39, knew the role was meant for her after Gerwig, 40, sent her the script. \u201cThe way the lines were written \u2026 I was like, \u2018Oh, she just wants me to do a cameo as myself. I don\u2019t have to stretch very far for this at all,\u201d the Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a> alum told Sirius XM\u2019s Jess Cagle<\/strong> in July.<\/p>\n Although the character Weird Barbie was impressively flexible, McKinnon revealed that she didn\u2019t have to do any splits for the film. \u201cThat was a fake leg \u2014 and a heavy one,\u201d she said during Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a>\u2019s July roundtable discussion with the Barbie<\/em> cast.<\/p>\n Issa Rae<\/strong><\/a>, who played President Barbie<\/a> in the fantasy comedy, chimed in to praise her costar for pulling off the stunt. \u201cEvery single person asked if that was your leg, and so the way you sold that, you should be proud,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n In addition to Weird Barbie, Mattel has released a number of other dolls<\/a> inspired by the highly anticipated film, which made a record-setting $162 million<\/a> during its opening weekend in July, including of course ones modeled after the flick\u2019s main Barbie and Ken, Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> and Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n During a July New York Times<\/em> <\/a>interview with Gosling, 42, Robbie, 33, revealed that she \u201cbribed\u201d Gosling to do the film by promising to bring him presents every day. The actress kept her word and Gosling joked that the daily gift-giving began to feel \u201cunsustainable.\u201d Still, Robbie held fast. \u201cI commit to a joke. I really do,\u201d she told the outlet.<\/p>\n Once Gosling agreed to join the cast, he told daughters Esmeralda, 8, and Amada, 7 \u2014 he shares them with partner Eva Mendes<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 that he\u2019d be playing Ken.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were confused,\u201d the Gray Man<\/em> actor said of his kids\u2019 reaction, noting that they don\u2019t actually call their Ken dolls by the name Ken. \u201cOne of them is named Darrell. And Darrell works at a grocery store. One of the Barbies\u2019<\/a> names is Gym Class.
