TikTok users in Europe will be able to switch off the personalized algorithm<\/a> behind its For You and Live feeds as the company makes changes to comply with the EU\u2019s Digital Services Act<\/a> (DSA). According to TikTok, disabling this function will show users \u201cpopular videos from both the places where they live and around the world\u201d instead of content based on their personal interests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n These changes relate to DSA rules<\/a> that require very large online platforms to allow their users to opt out of receiving personalized content \u2014 which typically relies on tracking and profiling user activity \u2014 when viewing content recommendations. To comply, TikTok\u2019s search feature will also show content that\u2019s popular in the user\u2019s region, and videos under the \u201cFollowing\u201d and \u201cFriends\u201d feeds will be displayed in chronological order when a non-personalized view is selected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Another change is that European users between the ages of 13 and 17 automatically won\u2019t be targeted with personalized ads based on their online activities, rather than having to opt out with a toggle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n TikTok is one of 19 companies<\/a> beholden to the DSA\u2019s rules \u2014 alongside other services like YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter (which Elon Musk is currently rebranding to X<\/a>) \u2014 so it likely won\u2019t be the only platform to make similar changes in Europe. TikTok hasn\u2019t provided a release date for any of these changes, but it says that it\u2019s aiming to meet the required obligations by the DSA\u2019s deadline of August 28th.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
