It\u2019s no longer just a Barbie world \u2014 Mattel\u2019s Polly Pocket toy<\/a> is now getting the live-action blockbuster treatment.<\/p>\n On the heels of Barbie\u2019s<\/em> 2023 movie success<\/a> \u2014 the Warner Bros. film earned $162 million<\/a> in its opening weekend \u2014 news of the upcoming Polly Pocket<\/em> film has become even more prominent. The film, however, was initially announced in summer 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst of all, they are two of my favorite ladies ever,\u201d Robbie Brenner<\/strong> told Variety<\/em><\/a> in July 2023 of Lily Collins<\/strong><\/a> and Lena Dunham<\/strong><\/a>, who are set to star and direct the project, respectively. \u201cIt\u2019s been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n Brenner \u2014 who produced Barbie<\/em> and runs Mattel Films \u2014 added: \u201cLily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It\u2019s just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we\u2019ll be making that at some point in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n Scroll down for everything to know about the Polly Pocket<\/em> movie:<\/p>\n The movie is reportedly about \u201ca young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.\u201d The film, which is the first live-action version of Polly Pocket, will look to the \u201890s version of the toy for inspiration. Polly Pocket\u2019s size has varied since its creation in the 1980s \u2014 it began as a micro-doll about an inch big that was stored in cute carriers \u2014 and its current slogan, \u201cTiny But Mighty,\u201d still fits.<\/p>\n Dunham, who is both writing and directing the project, gushed over the opportunity in June 2021. \u201cPolly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me \u2013 Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it\u2019s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM,\u201d Dunham to Variety<\/em><\/a> at the time. \u201cI\u2019m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension.\u201d<\/p>\n Collins confirmed her role as Polly Pocket in June 2021. \u201cLittle Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it\u2019s a real dream come true to announce this project!\u201d she wrote via Instagram<\/a> alongside a picture of her photoshopped into a Polly Pocket holder. \u201cCan\u2019t wait to dive into this pastel world.\u201d<\/p>\n Dunham told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> in October 2022 that she was finishing her second draft for the movie. \u201cWe have a lot of fun with the idea of what happens when a small person encounters a big world,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n The Girls<\/em> alum<\/a> teased that Collins\u2019 character will be quite small. \u201cLet\u2019s just say Polly Pocket was at her best when she was the original teensy tiny \u201990s size,\u201d Dunham said. \u201cThey made her a little bigger now, which I support, because of choking hazards. But I\u2019m writing \u201990s tiny.\u201d<\/p>\n Brenner confirmed to Variety<\/em> in July 2023 that there is a completed script, which she called \u201cgreat.\u201d<\/p>\n Collins will serve as a producer on the live-action movie<\/a> alongside Brenner and Kevin McKeon<\/strong>, who is part of the Mattel Films team. Sandino Moya-Smith<\/strong> and Winnie Carrillo<\/strong> will represent MGM (the studio behind the project) as producers, while Liz Watson<\/strong> and Michael P. Cohen<\/strong> will serve as executive producers.<\/p>\n There is no release date set for Polly Pocket<\/em>. Amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes<\/a>, the project has not yet begun filming.<\/p>\n The Polly Pocket doll and accessories were designed by Chris Wiggs in 1983.
