It seems like Barbie<\/em><\/a> has everything \u2014 girl power, big laughs, more shades of pink than any of Us<\/em> knew existed \u2014 but director Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> had to cut a few things from the massive blockbuster<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n While Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> and Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a> starred as the main Barbie and Ken in the film, which hit theaters on Friday, July 21, Gerwig intended to have Saoirse Ronan<\/strong> <\/a>and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong> <\/a>play small roles. She previously directed the duo in her solo directorial debut, Lady Bird<\/em>, in 2017 as well as her 2019 remake of Little Women<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Ronan] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it\u2019s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo,\u201d Gerwig told CinemaBlend<\/a> in an interview published earlier this month.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, the scheduling didn\u2019t work out for Ronan, and then similar obstacles prevented Chalamet from appearing. \u201cI was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn\u2019t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much,\u201d Gerwig shared.<\/p>\n Barbie<\/em> is not a very romantic movie. Though Robbie\u2019s Barbie is dating Gosling\u2019s Ken, the doll would rather have every night be girls night, and neither of them have any idea what Ken is supposed to do if he sleeps over at the Dreamhouse.<\/p>\n However, Gosling revealed that he and Robbie did make an attempt to figure out what a smooch would look like between the two characters.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was so funny trying to figure out what their idea of kissing might be,\u201d Gosling told People<\/em><\/a> during the joint interview with Robbie earlier this month. \u201cI\u2019m so glad all of that got cut out.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been getting told for years that I look like the girl from Sex Education<\/em>, who is Emma Mackey<\/strong>,\u201d Robbie told BuzzFeed<\/a> in early July. \u201cShe plays one of the Barbies in the movie pretty much because Greta and I thought it would be funny. We were gonna do this whole joke about us looking similar.\u201d<\/p>\n Mackey looked much more like Robbie when she had blonde hair in the early episodes of the Netflix hit, which debuted in 2019. However, after Mackey returned to her natural brunette locks and framed her face with bangs, the joke didn\u2019t quite land.<\/p>\n \u201cOnce we got all dressed up as our Barbies, we were kind of like, \u2018We don\u2019t actually look that similar,’\u201d Robbie recalled with a laugh. \u201cLike, when she\u2019s got her brown hair and I\u2019ve got my blonde hair, we don\u2019t look that similar, so we didn\u2019t put that joke in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, Robbie accepts compliments for Mackey\u2019s work. \u201cWhen people come up and say, \u2018I loved you in Sex Education<\/em>,\u2019 I just say, \u2018Thank you. Thank you so much,\u2019\u201d Robbie said.<\/p>\n While the lookalike joke was ultimately cut from the Barbie<\/em> movie, Gerwig and Robbie, who served as an executive producer on the film, made it pretty clear that they big Sex Education<\/em><\/a> fans. Mackey\u2019s Netflix costars Ncuti Gatwa<\/strong><\/a> and Connor Swindells<\/strong> appear in Barbie as a Ken and a Mattel intern, respectively.<\/p>\n In a behind-the-scenes photo released by Warner Bros., Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon<\/a><\/strong>) is seen lounging in a Dreamhouse pool with Ken happily lays his head in her lap. The photo shows Weird Barbie with a hand on Ken\u2019s bare chest while Gerwig covers her mouth, seemingly holding back laughter. Was Ken going to move on with Weird Barbie? Was Ken going to finally find out what to do at a sleepover? We may never know \u2014 but we\u2019d love to find out what was going on in this deleted scene.<\/p>\n While several moments had to end up on the cutting room floor, Gerwig kept the scene that was important to her \u2014 a brief moment where Barbie sees an older woman in the real world and tells her she\u2019s beautiful.<\/p>\n \u201cI love that scene so much,\u201d Gerwig told Rolling Stone<\/a> <\/em>in an interview published on July 3. \u201cAnd the older woman on the bench is the costume designer Ann Roth<\/strong>. She\u2019s a legend. It\u2019s a cul-de-sac of a moment, in a way \u2014 it doesn\u2019t lead anywhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, \u2018Well, you could cut it. And actually, the story would move on just the same.\u2019 And I said, \u2018If I cut the scene, I don\u2019t know what this movie is about.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n She added, \u201cThat\u2019s how I saw it. To me, this is the heart of the movie. The way Margot plays that moment is so gentle and so unforced. There\u2019s the more outrageous elements in the movie that people say, \u2018Oh, my God, I can\u2019t believe Mattel let you do this,\u2019 or, \u2018I can\u2019t believe Warner Bros. let you do this.\u2019 But to me, the part that I can\u2019t believe that is still in the movie is this little cul-de-sac that doesn\u2019t lead anywhere \u2014 except for, it\u2019s the heart of the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to a few different Kens, Allan was almost played by Mindhunter<\/em> star Jonathan Groff<\/strong> rather than Michael Cera<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cDear, dear Jonathan Groff was like, \u2018I can\u2019t believe I\u2019m typing this, but I can\u2019t do Allan<\/a>,\u2019\u201d Jones shared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nSaoirse Ronan and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s Cameos<\/h3>\n
