Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> may have just helmed one of summer\u2019s biggest blockbusters with the Barbie<\/em> movie\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 but she still has nerves about jumping into her next project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Gerwig, 39, is set to direct and write at least two of the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia<\/em> films, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>.<\/em> The movies,\u00a0which are based on the beloved C.S. Lewis novels<\/a>,\u00a0will premiere on Netflix and mark Gerwig\u2019s fantasy debut. The director, for her part, feels the pressure to deliver \u2014 but sees it as a positive thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI haven\u2019t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I\u2019m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,\u201d Gerwig said on the Thursday, July 20, episode of the \u201cTotal Film<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cI think when I\u2019m scared, it\u2019s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it\u2019ll be like, \u2018Maybe I shouldn\u2019t do that one.\u2019 No, I\u2019m terrified of it. It\u2019s extraordinary. And it\u2019s exciting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This isn\u2019t the first time cinema has headed into the land<\/a> of Narnia. Three adaptations \u2014 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian<\/em> and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader<\/em> \u2014 were released by Disney in 2005, 2008 and 2010, respectively. Lion<\/em>, in particular, was a soaring hit for critics and fans alike, earning over $745 million worldwide. In 2018, Netflix revealed they landed the rights to popular book series.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI hope to make all different kinds of movies in the course of the time I get to make movies, which \u2014 it\u2019s a long time, but it\u2019s also limited,\u201d Gerwig said on Thursday of wanting to keep her work multifaceted. \u201cI want to do big things and small things and everywhere in between, and having another big canvas is exciting and also daunting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n While Gerwig has previously helmed smaller indie movies including 2017\u2019s Lady Bird<\/em> and the 2019 adaptation of Little Women<\/em>, 2023\u2019s Barbie was the first\u00a0bigger-budget film she\u2019s tackled, writing and directing the project after being approached by executive producer \u2014 and titular star \u2014 Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt felt sparky to me in some way that felt kind of promising,\u201d Gerwig told\u00a0<\/em><\/span>Vogue<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>in May, adding that she would only agree to the job if her partner Noah Baumbach<\/strong><\/a> cowrote it with her. \u201cI was the one who said,\u00a0Noah and I will do this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Will Ferrell<\/a>, America Ferrera<\/a>, Michael Cera<\/a>, Issa Rae<\/a>, Dua Lipa<\/a><\/strong> and Simu Liu<\/strong><\/a> eventually joined the cast alongside Robbie, and the women found their perfect Ken in Ryan Gosling<\/strong><\/a>. The comedy, which premiered on Friday, July 21, is predicted to dominate the summer 2023 box office alongside Christopher Nolan\u2019s <\/strong><\/a><\/span>Oppenheimer<\/em>, delivering one of the biggest moviegoing weekends since 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
