It\u2019s been 20 years since Girl, Interrupted<\/em><\/a> first hit theaters, but there\u2019s no doubt that the indie film\u2019s legacy has been everlasting.<\/p>\n

Based on Susanna Kaysen<\/strong>\u2019s 1993 memoir, Girl, Interrupted<\/em> tells the harrowing story of a teenager\u2019s 1967 stay in a mental institution after she attempted to take her own life. When she was 18, Kaysen was admitted to McClean Hospital near Boston, where she stayed for over a year after being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.<\/p>\n

Kaysen, played by Winona Ryder<\/strong><\/a>, befriends a number of other young patients, including Daisy (Brittany Murphy<\/a>), Lisa (Angelina Jolie<\/strong><\/a>) and Polly (Elisabeth Moss<\/strong><\/a>). The women suffer from a range of mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder and sociopathic disorder. Jeffrey Tambor<\/strong><\/a>, Jared Leto<\/strong><\/a> and Whoopi Goldberg<\/strong><\/a> also star in the dark drama.<\/p>\n

The project was near and dear to Ryder\u2019s heart, having spent time at a facility herself when she was 20 years old. \u201cI was overworked and overtired \u2014 too tired to sleep,\u201d she recalled in a 1999 interview with the New York Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI was in a really bad state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie, at the time an up-and-coming actress, also looked back at the film as a transformative moment in her career. After all, it\u2019s the project that turned her an Academy Award winner and a household name.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the film there\u2019s a certain sense of them saying to Lisa, \u2018Nobody wants you to live, nobody likes the way you are \u2014 you\u2019d be better off if you were sedated and tied down and shut up,\u201d Jolie said of her Girl, Interrupted<\/em> character during a 2001 interview with Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAm I just too loud and too wild and do I just need to let everybody live their lives and shut up and calm down?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie continued, remembering the character fondly: \u201cShe lived too big, was too honest, was too hungry, was too full of life<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
