Sara Ramirez<\/strong><\/a> is shedding some light on why their And Just Like That<\/em><\/a> character, Che Diaz, decided to call off their romance with Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n The fictional couple\u2019s split played out during the Thursday, July 20, episode of the Sex And the City<\/em><\/a> spinoff. Che \u2014 a nonbinary comedian who was first introduced to viewers in season 1 of And Just Like That<\/em> \u2014 was the one to pull the plug.<\/p>\n \u201cChe is a very truthful character. They tell you the truth whether you like what you\u2019re hearing or not,\u201d Ramirez, 47, told USA Today<\/em><\/a> in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike<\/a> took effect last week.<\/p>\n Ramirez, who uses they\/them pronouns like their character, added that Che\u2019s decision came on the heels of \u201can emotional roller-coaster of ego death\u201d \u2014 their sitcom pilot not getting picked up.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re left with a grounded, almost unrecognizable version of themselves that steps forward and says, \u2018Listen, the wheels are falling off this car. This isn\u2019t working,\u2019\u201d the Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> alum<\/a> explained. \u201cI think it takes a lot of integrity to admit that to someone, whether they agree with you or not. But Miranda also has the awareness to acknowledge that it\u2019s not working. So, it\u2019s sad, but it\u2019s relatable. A lot of people go through that.\u201d<\/p>\n Ramirez\u2019s character generated a lot of conversation<\/a> after season 1 of AJLT<\/em> premiered in December 2021, with The Daily Beast<\/em><\/a> calling Che \u201cthe worst character on TV\u201d in January 2022. Ramirez told USA Today<\/em> that they receive such characterizations \u201cwith humor.\u201d<\/p>\n They continued: \u201cBut my hope is that in season 2 \u2014 just like we embrace the humanity of the women on the show \u2014 hopefully we continue to embrace Che Diaz\u2019s humanity. It\u2019s important we remember that LGBTQIA+ people<\/a> don\u2019t have to be perfect, just like the women don\u2019t have to be perfect. We get to be imperfect, we get to be unlikable and you still get to root for our humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n AJLT<\/em> executive producer Michael Patrick King<\/strong><\/a>, for his part, told the outlet that the goal for Che in season 2 was to show the \u201cvulnerability beneath the bravura.\u201d Ramirez echoed the sentiment, noting that they wanted to \u201cdive into more nuanced storytelling that is complicated and messy and human and difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n Breaking up with Miranda isn\u2019t the only challenge Che has faced in the second installment of the series. While working on their sitcom pilot, Che struggled with body image issues<\/a> after receiving criticism about their weight from a costumer on set.<\/p>\n In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>published on Thursday, Ramirez said that they could relate to the \u201cinternalized fatphobia\u201d Che deals with this season.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s something that most of us, if not all of us, have grown up with,\u201d they said. \u201cIt\u2019s been really helpful for me to have had the growth that I\u2019ve had around my internalized fatphobia. I\u2019m not in the place that Che is at with it, but as the actor, I was able to recall what it feels like to give your power over to people who don\u2019t know you or care about you, and then fall apart in your own relationship about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Two years before Che and Miranda\u2019s breakup episode<\/a> aired, Ramirez announced their own life update, revealing that they and Ryan Debolt<\/strong><\/a> had separated after nine years of marriage.<\/p>\n \u201cRyan and I are no longer together. We remain loving and supportive in how we are choosing to forge our new individual paths,\u201d Ramirez wrote via Instagram in July 2021. \u201cThank you for holding space around our choices and respecting our families\u2019 privacy as we navigate this process on our own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n Ramirez later described the split as a \u201cvery tender and vulnerable process\u201d during a November 2021 interview with Out<\/em> magazine<\/a>, adding that they were \u201creally proud of the way we have moved through things.\u201d<\/p>\n The exes remained friends<\/a> after ending their romantic relationship. \u201cI married the right man because there\u2019s no one else I\u2019d rather be getting divorced from,\u201d Ramirez told Out<\/em>. \u201cWe have the kind of foundation of love where we can joke like that. But it\u2019s because we\u2019re holding space for each other as friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
