Matt Willis<\/a> – who battled a cocaine addiction – on his ‘On The Mend with Matt Willis’ podcast, Dougie recalled: “I\u2019ve done it twice for two separate addictions.<\/p>\n\n“Both times I felt like they were huge life-changing things, they were like the worst times in my life and the best, for some reason.<\/p>\n
\n“I still reference my last stint in rehab now whenever I\u2019m like not feeling quite right or something.”<\/p>\n
\nThe ‘Obviously’ hitmaker struggled to tell his loved ones because he didn’t want to “hurt” them, which is why he’s been reluctant to share his story.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “It\u2019s horrible, that was like one of the worst parts about it.<\/p>\n
\n“I think that also plays into why I\u2019m fearful of talking about it, is more what others or friends and family will think, like how it will hurt them knowing.”<\/p>\n
\nDougie has learned to be “aware” of his triggers to prevent himself from spiralling and hopes he doesn’t have to live “life in fear” of relapsing forever.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: “I think the most important thing for me is being honest with myself, and knowing myself.<\/p>\n
\n“And I think it\u2019s that combination so, knowing what my \u2013 really honestly knowing what my triggers are and being aware of those. I see those triggers as like little f***ed up abstract demons that live inside my head and in my gut that can manifest from any kind of situation which will start eating at me.<\/p>\n
\n“And that can be for me the beginning of a spiral that eventually I will end up going back to drugs because there\u2019s no other way to get rid of them because it\u2019s so consuming.<\/p>\n
\n“I don\u2019t want to live in fear for the rest of my life.”<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column in 2020 about his Valium problem, Dougie said: \u201cIt\u2019s a slope that you don\u2019t really realise you\u2019re slipping down until it\u2019s too late. Then climbing out of that hole is a very, very long process.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhen asked if he is unable to remember the period, he added: \u201cHonestly, yeah. I mean, you get flashbacks, but it\u2019s a huge blur. It\u2019s strange.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThat\u2019s something which is really hard to come to terms with, literally losing two years. Two years just went like a weird dream. Coming out the other end was like, \u2018What? Where\u2019s my band?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDougie went to rehab after an intervention from his bandmates and said he thinks he agreed to go into a treatment centre without \u201ckicking up a fuss\u201d, although he can\u2019t remember for sure.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cIt needs to be controlled because it\u2019s such a slow process.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt was certainly an intervention. I don\u2019t remember kicking up a fuss but\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009I don\u2019t remember much really.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe \u2018Happiness\u2019 hitmaker opened up about his addiction in the documentary ‘McFly: All About You\u2019, where he said the relapse was the closest he ever came to “losing myself\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe explained: “On the one hand I felt inspired because friends in LA would take me to see other bands and stuff.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cOn the other hand, I was like, \u2018But my band\u2019s broken and it\u2019s all my fault\u2019. Valium was a way of just making all that disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
