We\u2019re all belting Olivia Rodrigo<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s \u201cVampire\u201d now, but the singer revealed her new song almost had a very different lyric.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was actually a debate whether or not \u2018fame f\u2013ker\u2019 should be in the song,\u201d Rodrigo, 20, told Audacy Check In<\/em><\/a> on Thursday, July 13. Some people said, \u2018It kind of isolates you from people, you can\u2019t really say things like that in song, it\u2019s not relatable\u2019 \u2014 yada, yada, yada, which I totally get and saw where they were coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n In the chorus of her latest single, released last month, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series<\/em><\/a> alum sings, \u201cBut you made me look so naive \/ The way you sold me for parts \/ As you sunk your teeth into me, oh \/ Bloodsucker, fame f\u2013ker \/ Bleedin\u2019 me dry like a goddamn vampire.\u201d<\/p>\n Though she had a successful career as a child actor, Rodrigo\u2019s fame has increased exponentially since her first single, \u201cDriver\u2019s License<\/a>,\u201d was released in January 2021. Singing about driving past an ex\u2019s house is a little more universal than a dating a fame-seeker. However, Rodrigo expects her listeners are smart enough to understand that the song is about more than that one line.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the song isn\u2019t about fame f\u2013king, I think it\u2019s more about someone being manipulative and sucking you dry, using you for all your worth,\u201d she shared. \u201cI think that\u2019s a universal theme, and I also think fame is more easily accessible now than it has ever been. It\u2019s not just people in L.A. and Hollywood that have to deal with that.\u201d<\/p>\n While \u201cfame f\u2013ker\u201d is in the explicit version, she belts \u201cdream crusher\u201d in the radio-friendly edit. Rodrigo shared a TikTok<\/a> earlier this month jokingly sharing replacement options that didn\u2019t make the cut, including \u201ctree hugger,\u201d \u201cwhale blubber,\u201d \u201cMark Zucker\u201d and \u201cgarlic butter.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cVampire<\/a>\u201d is the Grammy Award winner\u2019s first single off her second album, titled Guts<\/em>. She said the song helps set the tone for what to expect on the LP.<\/p>\n \u201cI just feel like it\u2019s a good introduction to the album,\u201d she told Audacy Check In<\/em>. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s not so far away from what I did in Sour, but it\u2019s also introducing some new topics and new attitudes, and new sounds, and kind of hinting at a little bit of what\u2019s the come.\u201d<\/p>\n The title Guts<\/em> was picked out before she even had the album written. \u201cI had [the title picked out] actually when I was making Sour<\/em>. I\u2019m like, \u2018I want the next one to be Guts<\/em>.\u2019 I had it in my head. I\u2019m like, \u2018Four letters, all caps, just like Sour<\/em>.\u2019 I love it. I just think it\u2019s an interesting word. People use it in so many interesting contexts, like spill your guts. Hate your guts, I think is a really interesting term,\u201d she told Apple Music<\/a> earlier this month. \u201c[It] means bravery, but it also means intuition, like listen to your gut.
