Pope Leo XIV<\/strong><\/a> has been diagnosed with cancer following surgery to remove a portion of his lung.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs planned, the Holy Father underwent thoracic surgery,\u201d read a statement<\/a> from the Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, October 13. \u201cTo ensure a radical resection, the lower lobe of his right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement added, \u201cAn intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected from the preoperative examinations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adenocarcinoma of the lung is the most common type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), according to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was detected at a very early stage and is well-defined,\u201d Pope Leo, 71, said outside St. Peter\u2019s Square on Sunday, October 11, according to CNN<\/span><\/a>. \u201cThe doctors deem it advisable to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pulmonary nodules are defined as areas of abnormal growth on the lungs that are typically noncancerous, per the Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a>. The nodules seldom cause symptoms, except in certain cases of chest pain, shortness of breath, chronic cough, fatigue or recurring respiratory infections.<\/p>\n
