Musgraves fired back: “I don\u2019t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.”<\/p>\n
\nThe comment was a nod to Noem previously admitting she had shot her 14-month-old puppy Cricket because she was “untrainable”.<\/p>\n
\nShe made the confession in her book No Going Back: The Truth on What\u2019s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.<\/p>\n
\nNoem was met with fierce backlash, and she defended herself in 2024 while acknowledging that “some people are upset” about the incident.<\/p>\n
\nShe wrote on X at the time: “The book is filled with many honest stories of my life, good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions, and lessons learned.<\/p>\n
\n“What I learned from my years of public service, especially leading South Dakota through COVID, is people are looking for leaders who are authentic, willing to learn from the past, and don\u2019t shy away from tough challenges.<\/p>\n
\nMy hope is anyone reading this book will have an understanding that I always work to make the best decisions I can for the people in my life…<\/p>\n
\n“The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down. Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them, I decided what I did. <\/p>\n
\n“Whether running the ranch or in politics, I have never passed on my responsibilities to anyone else to handle. Even if it\u2019s hard and painful.<\/p>\n
\n“I followed the law and was being a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor. As I explained in the book, it wasn’t easy. But often the easy way isn’t the right way.”<\/p>\n
\nNoem had recalled taking Cricket on a hunting trip with some older dogs in an attempt to calm her down.<\/p>\n
\nHowever, on the way home, Cricket got out of the truck and killed some of a family’s chickens, and bit the governor.<\/p>\n
\nShe wrote: “I hated that dog \u2026 At that moment, I realized I had to put her down.”<\/p>\n
\nIn the book, she revealed she took Cricket to a gravel pit and shot the dog.<\/p>\n
\nShe also killed a “nasty and mean” male goat her family owned, going back to her truck for another shell after he survived the initial shot.<\/p>\n
