Mikey Madison<\/strong><\/a>‘s character in The Social Reckoning<\/em><\/strong> is seen wearing gloves and leg warmers throughout the film and there’s an explanation for the fashion choice. <\/p>\n

Mikey<\/strong> portrays Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen<\/strong><\/a>, who is a real life person. While writer-director Aaron Sorkin<\/strong> did not want her to change her looks for the role, the character was still built off of Frances<\/strong>‘ true story.<\/p>\n

Mikey<\/strong> told Time<\/a><\/em>, “When I got the script, I knew about the Facebook Files, but I didn\u2019t know Frances\u2019 name. So I looked her up, and I was like, ‘She\u2019s blonde and has blue eyes. Why does Aaron want me for this?’ And he said, ‘I want you to try and build the character from my script.’ But of course I read her memoir and tried to do my due diligence because there was so much I didn\u2019t understand. I don\u2019t have a personal relationship with social media at all.”<\/p>\n

All about the real Frances Haugen’s medical condition<\/h3>\n

We learn in the movie that Frances <\/strong>has a medical condition that affects her body temperature, which explains the need for the gloves and leg warmers.<\/p>\n

Frances<\/strong> has a severe level of Celiac disease that causes neuropathy, which is another way of describing nerve damage. This alters the way her body processes temperature, causing her to sometimes feel hot or cold in her extremities (aka her hands, wrists, feet, and legs).<\/p>\n

“Estimates suggest that around 10% of celiac disease patients may experience neurological issues like peripheral neuropathy or ataxia,” according to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In the movie, Frances <\/strong>moves to Puerto Rico during the covid-19 pandemic so that she can be in a warmer climate instead of suffering while working at home. In a scene that takes place after she’s ordered back home by Facebook, Frances <\/strong>is seen sweating in her apartment because of how hot she needs to keep the room. <\/p>\n
