Cloudflare announced Friday<\/a> that it\u2019s acquiring Deno, the startup behind the programming runtime of the same name.<\/p>\n According to Cloudflare\u2019s Kenton Varda, Cloudflare will use this acquisition to improve its Workers programming model and platform, which allows customers to build and run software on Cloudflare\u2019s network. (Varda is principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers.)<\/p>\n Deno \u2014 which was co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js<\/a> creator Ryan Dahl \u2014 recently launched celld, an open source implementation of Workers, which Varda wrote \u201cdelighted\u201d the Cloudflare team. Varda argued that contrary to \u201ca popular theory\u201d that the company \u201cmade Cloudflare Workers work differently from other cloud platforms in order to create \u2018lock-in,\u2019\u201d the company believes \u201cbeing open source and giving people an escape hatch is good business<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Dahl, meanwhile, wrote that his team is \u201cjoining Cloudflare to make the Workers programming model a mainstream way to build servers.\u201d<\/p>\n The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Deno had raised a total of $26 million<\/a>, including a Series A led by Sequoia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
