it’s because I found a great deal with American Airlines miles or it offered the cheapest route compared to other airlines, by a meaningful margin. Given that, I appreciate not needing to fly American frequently to get good value from this card.

American charges at least $45 for your first checked bag; as long as I check a bag twice each year, I’ll come out with $90 in value. That’s extremely close to breaking even on the card’s $99 annual fee after the first year.

I can achieve this with just one round-trip or two one-way flights.

I consider priority boarding and access to American Airlines award redemptions (more on that later) more than worth the remaining $9 I’d need to cover to claw back what I pay for this card each year.

American Airlines A321XLR. That may not be a big deal for someone like me who doesn’t fly with American consistently, but it could be a dealbreaker for a dedicated American Airlines flyer.

In addition, the Platinum Select doesn’t offer much flexibility in recovering the value of its annual fee after the first cardholder year. You won’t have a variety of statement credits to use in your daily life, nor can you recoup value with a wide roster of American Airlines-associated perks.

Finally, this card’s earning rates are relatively modest. Unless you put a lot of expenditures on it each year, you’ll earn American miles slowly.

AAdvantage Platinum Select vs. AAdvantage Globe

The next step up from the <template id="P:8"/> in Citi’s American Airlines lineup is the <template id="P:9"/> (see rates and fees).

The Globe carries a higher $350 annual fee, but its additional benefits may justify the cost for travelers who can use them. If you’re interested in lounge access, the Globe provides four passes to Admirals Club locations. This is nice for those who fly with American often enough to want lounge access, but not frequently enough for a full-blown Admirals Club membership.

SOL STOCK LTD

Additionally, you’ll receive a companion certificate every year starting in your second cardholder year. This companion certificate is good for a single round-trip main cabin domestic flight on American Airlines. You’ll need to pay $99 when redeeming, plus applicable taxes and fees.

American Airlines frequent flyers may find it easier to justify the Globe’s annual fee than the Platinum Select’s, but those who only fly with the airline a handful of times each year will likely be better off with the cheaper Platinum Select.

To learn more, check out our full review of the AAdvantage Globe.

Is the AAdvantage Platinum Select worth it?

If you fly American Airlines a few times or more each year, it’s likely the <template id="P:a"/> can make a lot of sense for you. The main question at hand is whether you feel its $99 annual fee after the first cardholder year is justified by checked bags, priority boarding and the card’s other perks. Plus, it’s important to consider the value of access to American Airlines’ loyalty program.

Travelers who rarely fly American may get more value from a flexible rewards card, while more frequent American flyers may prefer the additional benefits available on the Globe or Executive.

When to apply for the AAdvantage Platinum Select

Currently, for a limited time, new <template id="P:b"/> cardholders can earn 80,000 bonus miles after spending $3,500 on purchases in the first four months of account opening. According to our valuations, that bonus is worth $1,160.

This is the best offer we’ve seen on this card, so it’s a great time to apply. More frequent American flyers who want lounge access or additional perks may be better off with the Globe or Executive.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®Earn 80,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus milesat Citi‘s secure site. Terms & restrictions apply. See rates & fees.

Source link

As someone who flies American Airlines semi-frequently, the $99 ($0 introductory annual fee for the first year) (see rates and fees) makes a lot of sense for my wallet.
