Heroes<\/em><\/a> creator Tim Kring<\/strong> has reflected on casting the late Hayden Panettiere<\/strong><\/a> in her now-iconic role as superpowered cheerleader Claire Bennet on the NBC series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not look very far; we saw her, and that was it. First of all, she was an extraordinary actress,\u201d Kring, 69, told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Friday, September 25, in honor of Heroes<\/em>\u2019 20th anniversary. \u201c[Hayden] just embodied that girl-next-door quality, and then her range was exceptional.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere was an entertainment industry veteran by the time she landed a starring role in Heroes<\/em> in 2006, as her mom Lesley Vogel<\/strong> booked her daughter\u2019s first commercial acting job when she was just 11 months old.<\/p>\n

Before she was cast in Heroes<\/em>, Panettiere had turned in impressive performances in hit movies Remember the Titans<\/em> and A Bug\u2019s Life<\/em>, in addition to having a three-year stint on daytime soap One Life to Live<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJack Coleman, who played Hayden Panettiere\u2019s onscreen dad on Heroes, is expressing his grief over her death at the age of 36. \u201cI\u2019m heartbroken. I couldn\u2019t begin to put my thoughts into words until now, and they will be inadequate,\u201d Coleman, 68, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday, August 19. He continued, \u201cI\u2019ve loved Hayden since [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was just pure talent that walked in the door [when Panettiere auditioned]. There\u2019s nobody in my head that we saw other than her,\u201d Kring recalled. \u201cFor some of the other parts, I can remember other actors from casting, but no, she was it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The writer-producer remembered marveling that Panettiere was able to capture the \u201coffbeat\u201d qualities he\u2019d imagined for Claire Bennet.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven with Hayden Panettiere, I described her as the cheerleader who you had the crush on, not the one that everybody else had the crush on,\u201d Kring explained. \u201cSo not the golden girl, but slightly quirky, with something offbeat about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kring was one of many friends and costars who paid tribute to Panettiere\u2019s life and legacy after she died at age 36<\/a> in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. (The Greenville County Coroner\u2019s Office announced last week that the actress\u2019 death was accidental<\/a>, caused by the \u201ctoxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine.\u201d The coroner added that \u201cno signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death,\u201d though an investigation is ongoing, per Panettiere\u2019s rep.)<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a showrunner, I have come to appreciate how rare it is to cross paths with a talent like Hayden\u2019s,\u201d King wrote in an essay for Variety<\/em> on August 19. \u201cBut more importantly, I will remember her as a kind and gentle person who was always a joy and an inspiration to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking back on their work together, Kring suggested that Panettiere was truly unlike any young actor he\u2019s ever hired.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost 16-year-olds don\u2019t know how to interpret or articulate these emotions, let alone embody them. But she had a deep understanding of human nature that belied her age. As a result, she could find moments within a scene that always made it deeper, or funnier, or more powerful than it was on the page,\u201d he noted. \u201cAs a writer, you yearn for a relationship with an actor who elevates everything that you write and finds hidden nuances that you didn\u2019t realize were there. That happened very, very often with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kring continued, \u201cShe was a delight to work with, professional, joyful and willing to go out on a limb and experiment with a scene. She had this bull-in-a-china-shop quality \u2014 a determination that really influenced how we wrote her character. The best characters always meet you halfway between the actor and what\u2019s on the page.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in Heroes<\/em>, where Claire Bennet ended and Hayden became a blurred line,\u201d the writer acknowledged. \u201cShe never had to change how she would say something to be Claire Bennet. It was the Hayden voice cadence that we got used to writing for.\u201d<\/p>\n
