The company\u2019s 19-year-old founder, Ethan Thornton, is spearheading the R&amp;D of hydrogen-powered platforms for the military, including unmanned aerial vehicles, munitions and hydrogen-generation systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/10\/vanmoof-the-e-bike-darling-skids-off-track-sales-paused-execs-depart\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VanMoof skids off track:<\/a><\/strong> Dutch e-bike startup VanMoof sped into the mobility world with more than $200 million in venture backing. But its fortune appears to have taken a turn for the worse. The company stopped taking orders in late June, and sources claim that senior staff, including the CEO and a co-founder, left executive roles as VanMoof attempts to secure a bridge round to stave off bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/06\/robotaxi-haters-in-san-francisco-are-disabling-waymo-cruise-traffic-cones\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pedestrians fight back:<\/strong><\/a> A decentralized group of safe streets activists in San Francisco realized they can disable Cruise and Waymo robotaxis by placing a traffic cone on a vehicle\u2019s hood \u2014 and they\u2019re encouraging others to do it, too. The protest comes in the lead-up to a hearing that will likely see Waymo and Cruise expand their robotaxi services in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/10\/instagrams-threads-app-reaches-100-million-users-in-just-five-days\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Threads hits another milestone:<\/a><\/strong> Despite lacking features such as post search, direct messages and hashtags, Instagram\u2019s text-based app and Twitter competitor Threads achieved the mark of 100 million sign-ups this week. The Twitter rival was launched on June 6 (or June 5 in the Americas), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quiverquant.com\/threadstracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/12\/gmail-brings-in-calendly-style-availability-sharing-from-google-calendar\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Calendar gets availability sharing:<\/a> <\/strong>This week, Google released new scheduling-related features for Gmail with a Google Calendar integration, including quick event creation and easy availability sharing. Gmail will now have a calendar icon at the bottom of the conversation view, which will have two options \u2014 \u201cCreate an event\u201d and \u201cOffer times you\u2019re free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/10\/starlink-satellites-are-dodging-objects-in-orbit-thousands-of-times-every-month\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Satellites get dodgy:<\/a> <\/strong>Starlink satellites are making thousands of avoidance maneuvers as low Earth orbit becomes more crowded \u2014 feeding worries that a catastrophic impact is inevitable. SpaceX\u2019s orbital communication satellites performed maneuvers just over 25,000 times in the six-month period between December 1, 2022, and May 21, 2023, double the number of avoidance maneuvers that Starlink satellites made in the previous reporting period.<\/p>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/07\/pulsar-fusion-interstellar-space-travel-a-reality\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making interstellar space travel a reality:<\/a><\/strong> Space propulsion company Pulsar Fusion has started construction on a large nuclear fusion chamber in England as it races to become the first firm to fire a nuclear fusion\u2013powered propulsion system in space. Nuclear fusion propulsion tech, should it prove commercially viable, could reduce the travel time to Mars by half and the time to Titan, Saturn\u2019s moon, to two years instead of 10.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/11\/anthropic-releases-claude-2-the-second-generation-of-its-ai-chatbot\/?mrfhud=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Anthropic releases Claude 2:<\/strong><\/a> This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/23\/anthropic-raises-350m-to-build-next-gen-ai-assistants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic<\/a>, the AI startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI execs, announced the release of a new text-generating AI model called Claude 2. Anthropic claims that Claude 2 is superior to its predecessor, Claude 1.3, in several areas and is especially capable in tasks like searching across documents, summarizing, writing and coding and answering questions about particular topics.<\/p>\n<h2>Audio<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re wanting for a podcast to pass the time, look no further than TechCrunch\u2019s growing roster.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equity<\/a>, the crew talked about a range of topics, including a new Chinese AI model that had them wondering who\u2019s really going to win the AI war; Founders Fund scooping up a new partner; Connetic Ventures using AI models to create a less-biased landscape for entrepreneurs; and the cooling tech layoffs and inflation.<\/p>\n<p>And over at <a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/chainreaction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chain Reaction<\/a>, Jacquelyn interviewed Maria Shen, a general partner on the investment team at Electric Capital, an early-stage venture firm focused on crypto, blockchain, fintech and marketplaces.
