Fans of Ali Hazelwood<\/strong>\u2019s book The Love Hypothesis<\/em> might be surprised by the amount of changes \u2014 and omissions \u2014 in the new Lili Reinhart<\/strong><\/a> movie.<\/p>\n

Prime Video\u2019s new rom-com follows Ph.D. candidate Olive (Reinhart) and professor Adam a.k.a (Tom Bateman<\/strong>) as they pretend to be in a relationship before real feelings begin to get in the way. Hazelwood\u2019s novel was originally a fan fiction story about Rey and Kylo Ren from the Star Wars franchise. (Bateman\u2019s wife, Daisy Ridley<\/strong>, happened to play Rey opposite Adam Driver<\/strong> as Kylo.)<\/p>\n

Ahead of the movie\u2019s debut, Reinhart and Bateman hinted that some shakeups<\/a> were made in order to bring Hazelwood\u2019s vision to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the script was able to feel like for me \u2014 while still keeping the integrity of both characters and doing the book justice,\u201d Reinhart explained at Prime Video\u2019s Obsessed Fest in June 2026. \u201cObviously, the importance of the book and the source material [is something we thought about].\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cWe wanted to totally respect that and I think our writer Sarah [Rothschild] absolutely did. The heart of the book is in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bateman agreed about the onscreen<\/a> differences, adding, \u201cEvery single person involved with this had such a deep love for this book and for doing it justice for everyone that loves it, for the amazing characters and the world. The intention was always, \u2018We want to make this the best it can be.\u2019 And who better to tell it than a group of people who love it so much?\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the changes that were made for the big screen, the actor insisted the source material \u201cwas always front and center\u201d for the cast and crew. \u201cWe weren\u2019t trying to get away from it in any way,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were just trying to do our very, very best to give everyone what they want out of this story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s Crush on Olive<\/h2>\n

As book fans know, Adam and Olive originally met prior to the events<\/a> in the book. Olive, however, was struggling with expired contacts and didn\u2019t realize who she was speaking to. Adam knew \u2014 and went on to develop a crush.<\/p>\n

The movie does include the flashback, but Adam\u2019s yearning for Olive \u2014 which explains why he agreed to fake date her in the book \u2014 isn\u2019t included on screen.<\/p>\n

Holden\u2019s Absence<\/h2>\n

The biggest loss \u2014 especially to readers \u2014 was the character of Holden Rodriguez, Adam\u2019s best friend and the love interest of Olive\u2019s friend Malcolm. Holden was instrumental in bringing Adam and Olive together in Hazelwood\u2019s novel and was often the comical relief to even out Adam\u2019s more grumpy demeanor.<\/p>\n

The Love Hypothesis<\/em> fans were on the edge<\/a> of their seats waiting to see how the movie adapted the famous Chapter 16 \u2014 a.k.a Adam and Olive having sex for the first time. The movie version was significantly shorter (it technically spanned across three chapters in the book) and left out some memorable moments, such as Adam\u2019s \u201cyou can take it\u201d line.<\/p>\n

Changing the Breakup<\/h2>\n

Olive is the one who ended her relationship with Adam in the book after being sexually harassed by his friend Tom. Adam later found out what happened and they got back together, which the movie chose to change.<\/p>\n

Instead, Adam ended his arrangement with Olive on screen as a way to help her focus on her career.<\/p>\n

The movie also addressed the issue with Tom (Arty Froushan) by having Olive\u2019s friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) be the one to fill Adam in. This was a major departure from the book, which devoted an entire scene to Olive playing audio of Tom making an advance on her, leading to a heated confrontation between the two men.<\/p>\n

In the source material, Hazelwood had fans read between the lines when it came to Olive\u2019s demisexuality. The movie, however, has a whole scene devoted to her learning about the label and how it could apply to her experience.<\/p>\n
