Despite Scott Wolf<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s brief return to Doc<\/em>, the season 3 premiere officially wrote off his character, Richard.<\/p>\n

During the Tuesday, September 22, episode of the hit Fox series, Ben (Blair Underwood<\/strong>) asked Amy (Molly Parker<\/strong>) about Richard\u2019s whereabouts, to which she replied, \u201cHe needed a fresh start. He is just over at Eastside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers were originally introduced to Richard in season 1. His journey on screen wasn\u2019t easy \u2014 with Amy later realizing that her colleague was at fault for a patient\u2019s death. She was about to reveal his mistake to her superiors before she suffered a serious crash that wiped her memory of the last eight years.<\/p>\n

Richard ultimately confessed in the finale, which ended his career<\/a> at the hospital.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll good things must come to an end, even when it comes to TV. Over the years, many television stars have suddenly left their roles \u2014 while others have been cut from a series without much notice. Anna Faris announced in September 2020 that she was leaving CBS\u2019 Mom after starring as the lead character [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe will be back. He will come back in a very surprising way,\u201d executive producer Hank Steinberg shared with U<\/em>s in September 2025. \u201cAnd then he will be able to come in with a very different energy than last year, which should be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox confirmed that same month that Wolf<\/a>, 58, would reprise his role for a multi-episode guest arc. Wolf, for his part, previously spoke to Us about how Richard\u2019s secret would drive his story line on the medical series.<\/p>\n

\u201c[My character on Doc] is my No. 1 favorite in terms of my enjoyment of the complexity,\u201d Wolf told Us in January 2025. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten to explore these different medical worlds playing doctors. But I\u2019ve never had a more fun, interesting, complicated and sometimes painful character to play. And to be back working with Fox again after I started with Party of Five [in the \u201990s], they are two of my favorite experiences by far. It is full circle in some fun ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolf said he loved playing \u201ca flawed human being,\u201d adding, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like I had to figure out how to justify a bad guy doing bad things. This was a very good person who any of us could wind up being. But with his circumstances, he winds up in this terrible situation where a mistake has happened and his reaction to it is to just get protective.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, the actor said he appreciated how Doc<\/em> made Richard address the mistakes he made.<\/p>\n
